Maybe we could add to the ADMINISTRIVIA post some guidelines for posting to the newsgroup. I would be willing to help maintain the guidelines. Here are a few that I remember reading in another newsgroup (paraphrased): 1. Keep your subject somewhat related to the theme of the newsgroup. A disclaimer saying "Non-TMBG" should be used VERY sparingly. 2. If you do not have anything to add to the conversation then don't waste the bandwidth. 3. Before you post, THINK - Will people really be interested in what I have to say? 4. When referencing a previous post, do not attach the entire contents. Just cut & paste (it's not very hard to do) the part you are referencing and add you're comments. 5. Use smiley and winks when saying something in jest. 6. Do not post in all capitals, people think you're shouting. Please no flames. I am just trying to help make a more peaceful and serene newsgroup for everyone. You're aim will help. Personally, I don't think it should have been released. It is just as much a novelty as you can get, and is really only entertaining the first time you hear it. I agree that it wouldn't work well on an EP as a b-side, and that it would be *better* on THEN, but it is still out of place because of the flood-factor and also because it really isn't a very good song. Then someone mentioned that They released the song because They had lost information about who sent it to them...I think this is only partially true, this wasn't the only reason to release it, but it was an interesting side-effect of releasing it. This is SO true. I've had this sentiment unconsciously hidden in the back of my mind for a while now. I have no idea if 'most' of today's music sucks, I really don't know. There seems to be quite a few bands on top of the alternative world that are really lackluster and unoriginal, just being repetitious and striving to be Nirvana or Pearl Jam or even the Pixies. To some extent the mainstream 'pop' world is also a bit of a bore and some material put out by the rap and country genres could be a lot better. But 'most'? There is SO much music out there. I can't even come close to exploring all the music I'd like to, because I just don't have the money. If I bought all the cds I'd like to, I'd have to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars. And then I really only have the time and energy to explore my own local scene...I can only imagine all the other amazing indie bands in cities around the country that I just don't know about yet. And then foreign bands... Sheesh, there is good music flying everywhere. Alls ya have to do is look. Nathan Todd a.k.a. I like Capote's quote," I loved her enought to forget myself, my self-piting despairs, and be content that something she thought happy was going to happen." Just switch the she to he and stuff.. and it's my view on Linnell's marriage. On another note, I think too many people are far too whiny when it comes to posts. Keep in mind that you subscribed to a list with real people on it, not robots with only one interest. I think it's human nature to want to share these interests when you know you've got one thing in common. I'm on about 5 lists, and even though I love TMBG, there are a lot of posts that I don't care about. Prob. more so than some of my other lists. They play pop songs. Even though within Their pop structure They have many variences in types of songs played, they all fit into the general pop category, and that is the type of band They consider themselves, I'm pretty sure. Some of Theirs songs take on a jazz feel, others polka and still others hard rock, but They have really strong pop sensabilities and make really well-crafted tunes in the pop tradition. Granted, They are much more original and vary much more than other bands in the category, but They are pop nonetheless. Nathan Todd a.k.a. That is a sample from the 1970's song "Convoy". Ya know: "We got a great big convoy rockin' through the night. Yeah we gotta big ol' convoy, ain't she a beautiful site; CONVOY!" I think the quote on the remix is "hey you wanna give me a 10-9 on that pig pen (or big ben)" and while he repeats that you can hear a female voice saying 'convoy', she is kinda hard to hear because its sounds warped. It took me a long time to figure that out, but I went out and bought the song convoy (It's from the movie of the same name) and it's there in the song. There are two main charaters in the song: rubber duck (the singer) and pig pen (or big ben). Hey by the way, anyone know what a swindle sheet is? I hate to pull a Doomsday on you guys....;) I hate to pull a Bobby Ewing on you guys.... ;) I hate to pull a Elvis on you guys....;) I hate to pull a Richard Nixon on you guys....:) I hate to pull a Abe Vigoda on you guys....;) Well, I tried to leave. I said to myself "you have too much to do! You can't waste time with this silliness! List Schmist!" and unsubscribed, and tried to draw. Well.... all was good... for about four hours. THEN I went to the mall..... AND BOUGHT THEN! WAHOOOOO!!! ( I also looked for Nightgown of the sullen moon..couldn't find it.) But, to my chagrin and horror... I recieved NO lyrics booklet. NOTHING. NADA. Merely a little cardboard overlap with the list of songs. Nothing. So, in abject (yet still happy) horror, I just this minute flipped on my radiation king and listened to all the songs and was happy. Then I began to type up a "I gots me no lyrics" letter, and found some happy bye bye messages from various goodly listie folk. And then, compounded with the whole "What if I miss out on Theyness?!?!" emotion, just this minute, resubscribed. I _love_ THEN! sure, it's three albums I OWN, plus some, but it is SPECTACULAR! (secret inner thoughts.... 'this makes up for FS!...shhh! you were'nt supposed to say that, Mike! ShhhhHH!) Well.. it's not SPECTACULAR.. more like DAMN DAMNIT GOOD. 'Spectacular' would have to be saved for the MISCt2. Well, I'm blithering. Disc One (the albums) sounded like they were recorded (or enhanced) in an echo chamber. Cool though. Damn! I'm happy! ^_^ and I've discovered THESE! MUHUHAHHA! ^_^ and this one! >^.^< MUHUHAHAHAHAHAH@!@!!!!! BUT.. Being a creature of the comic books, I would seriously like to say that this was no big "I'll make them think I left" gimmick. I am just a mush brained waffler, and I am addicted to THEY and people who can't shut up about them. I merely thought that if I wasn't bothering myself with THEY and the other madness on the internet, that I would FINALLY get to drawing the great american comic strip. I was wrong. Horribly wrong. As wrong as the time I tried jalapen~o chips. As wrong as the time I switched locks on lockers in junior high. As wrong as the time when I hid in her closet until she came home and... well... not as wrong as that i guess. ^_^ I'm back. I'm better than ever before. And the week and four hours that I've been away from you people (computer problems, and my afternoon unsubscription) ..well.. it honestly HASN'T been torture, but I missed the usual listieness. I missed each one of you. You, and you. Oh, and you too. And you there,... get that hand back where we can see it.. and you! Where do you think YOU'RE going? HA! Hugs and Kisses and Antelopes, Mike "I think you have another song for us. Would you like to perform it?" Leffel (orchestral music begins) I swear upon your graves and your puppies in the bottles of gin, I swear by all that is Almighty.. I swear that my webpage will be updated by May 15th, and it will be the best damn Mike Leffel Webpage you'll ever god darn see. I am Mike Leffel. And I am a cartoonist. (audience gasps, then cheers wildly as I tear off my dress, revealing both a sexual female physique, and a gigantic robot lizard creature from Mars, who only wants to read tabloids and spit at babies.) ------------------------------ Message-Id: <199704190113.UAA14741@cereal.ncfcomm.com> From: "Mike Leffel" Subject: TMBG: Fw: TMBG! yes, it's actually TMBG! -or- Now the bastard is making THEN references in every blasted post. It really depends on the person. Not everyone has the same musical taste and that is good. :) Diversity is the spice of life. But ppl *should* be respectful of others taste even if it is unappealing to them. THEREFORE IF SOMEONE *DOES* SAY NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT THEM, I IGNORE them. After all "it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt." However, if you introduce a person to a band (ie play a song for them, or via concert etc), just step back and see if they enjoy the music. I've caught myself on more than one occasion trying to get ppl to listen to Them. I.E "Antoneta, [an-toe-net-a] can I borrow Flood, for that particle song?" "Um,Ya SURE here's lincoln, pink, and john henery!" I know it's hard to control your level of enthusiasm, but you don't want to turn ppl off. It was weird in high school 'cause no-one liked Them in my age group except for my Bio teacher (kewl guy). He'd bring a tape deck to class, and play Them. When I first heard him do that I a was happy, happy, happy girl. =) In my senior year I introduced a couple of people to appolo18 and they loved it. My boyfriend didn't like tmbg at first. He knew that I love Them so he got me tickets to Their concert as a surprise gift for when I came back from camp... and HE wanted to go with me, not because he liked Them, but because he liked me. ;) Three years later we're still together, and They have grown on him. Just the other day we were driving and I put my tmbg mix in the player and for the first time he tried to sing along. When Birdhouse came on, he sang: "Luke and Harry in the outlet by the lightswitch, who watches over you?" I cracked up laughing. He turned to me and said "who are Luke and Harry? Are they suppose to be funny?" Then on ipalindromei, he was singing "benolyn" for the background vocals instead of "man o man." I thought that was so neat. You have to understand that he is soooo conservative, and it really is a pleasure to see him let loose, and not be afraid to make a mistake singing. :) I just thought I'd share that. Thanks for your attention. =) PS Does anyone know if They are coming to Canada any time soon??? -A (sqaured) ============================================================================ RABID CHILD writes: 461808 081846 ********** ~ ~ ( @ @ ) () ______ \____/ "Somebody put their finger In the President's ears, It wasn't too much later They came out with Johnson's Wax" -TMBG ============================================================================ ------------------------------ Message-Id: Date: Sat, 19 Apr 1997 02:31:41 -0400 From: antoneta.argiloff@utoronto.ca (Antoneta Argiloff) Subject: TMBG: "haters" Hi: This is my first post, (no longer a lurker?), so 'go easy on the newbie.' =) I don't believe ppl can be converted to like an artist or band.
