Matador? Huh? Message-ID: So I'm watching MTV, as I am wont to do, and it just happens to be "Indie Outing" featuring my hero, Janeane Garafolo. So anyway, she's talking about something out from Matador about how to become rockstars (on this new video compilation they've released) and I get all excited thinking that it's that spiffy Yo La Tengo video with Dave Cross and Baa Bodenkirk. But no, it's not, and I prepare to be sorely disappointed. Instead it's this little play involving some dork in a matador outfit trying to, well, be a rockstar. Anyhoo, he's demoing for some record execs, and one of the execs looks _mighty_ familiar. I think, "Hey, that guy looks like Flansy! Glasses 'n everything! But it can't be..." Then i look again, and am treated to a full-on face shot of this guy, and I _swear_ it's Flansy. Of course, there're no credits and Janeane says nothing about the clip featuring anyone from TMBG, much less John. Figures. So what I'm asking is, does anyone have, or have seen, this video and can confirm this suspicion o' mine? It gave me pause as I couldn't imagine Flansy appearing on another record label's video thing (well, not without getting in trouble that is), but then it occurred to me that, since Monopuff had been shopping for a new lable, they might've chosen Matador. Anyone? Anyone? BTW, on a minorly related side note, I just got Yo La Tengo's _Electr-o-pura_ and it _rocks_! Fistler" Subject: TMBG: Lincoln Hi everone! Just been reading back issues of the digest on Lincoln. I personally think Lincoln kicks ass. I think they are a great opening band and apperently so do a lot of people that go to TMBG concerts. Accoding to Chris, TMBG's tour manager extened their tour with them becasue they have the all time best selling album of any TMBG opening band, even beating the Candy Butchers. One major complaint that I hear about Lincoln is that they need to perform new songs. While this is true (They have a lot of excellent songs that they could play on stage), you have to remember that TMBG and Lincoln are still performing songs based on that most average people that go to concerts only see them once in a while, not like some of us that see them multiple times in a few months. And even if you think they are doing something wrong, Chris and the rest of Lincoln are more than happy to hear what you have to say. In fact out side of JMU yesterday he asked my sister and I what I thought of certain songs, what could be changed, what songs should be thrown out. He says he does the songs they do to try to please the crowd by tring to rock but he admits they they are not a rocking type of band but more lyric oriented (Listen to Stop and Wish You were dead on the album). If you didn't know the lyrics of these songs they would probally annoy you if you're in a concert egarly awaiting TMBG. And as for not being intresting on stage, Chris says it hard to come up stuff to say on stage and people aren't really there to see Lincoln they are they to see TMBG and the crowd wouldn't want them to waste time on stage or in some song cases hear a lyric ortiened song on stage when its hard to make out lyrics when you do a song like (Just listen to Rest Awile, Certian People I Could Name or the Middle part of Dr. Worm on stage). Chris also says that Flansburg has a real talent with story telling and people like that are priceless. Lincoln is one of the more accessable and easy to talk to bands. Hell out side of Providence he came out and got his picture taken with a few people. Out side of Poughkeepise's Chance we got there the same time they did so they let us in so we could hang arond and talk to them and they put us on the guest list like forever it seems. In front of JMU we've even passed the football around before they set up. They are even letting us so thier offical web page as soon as we get together with them and collect more info. Their songs are even good. Buy their album and listen to it a few times. I think you'll like it. I don't think they will be the next TMBG, but they are not trying to be. But I do think in the future they will have a big following. Just remember how many people didn't like TMBG back in the day. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 05:38:51 -0500 (EST) From: Beth Connell Subject: TMBG: Selling boot cassettes??? I know that people who trade tapes are walking a fine line between legality and illegality, and basically survive by not getting caught, but I /know/ that selling boots is very illegal, and is likely to get a lot of people in trouble (including, unfortunately, and tape traders caught in the crossfire). This brings up the question of what should we, if anything, do about it? Actually, what they said is that they already have some more songs recorded on wax cylinder from the same jam that they recorded "I Can Hear You". They wanted to release them on an EP but it hasn't come to be yet. But that brings up a good question.. The night before I had gone to the Virginia Film Festival at UVA and had requested the night off. She asked if I had a good time "last night," and I said yep. Sarah then started to brag about meeting them in the lobby, and I thought she was talking about film festival guests; Michael Moore, Larry Flynt, Jason Robards or somebody. No, all together now, it was TMBG. She had gone to dinner in Harrisonburg and stopped at the Sheraton Saturday night because I think she was a manager there or at the adjoining restaurant and was waiting on her husband to finish helping some sick-out-of his-mind frat guy in the bathroom when she asked who the people were hanging out in the lobby, to which the hotel management replied "Some rock band that's playing JMU." I had talked up the concert at work so she was able to say the name correctly, to the astonishment of her friends. Sarah's not a TMBG person, her wedding music was all country as is ALL of the music at the place I work, not gonna give them any publicity. And now she keeps throwing it in my face how they were just sitting on couches in the lobby and she thought "Joey would probably like this." That was a long way for a little payoff. I thought it was cool. Gotta learn the Cliff's Notes method. What would you hope to achieve by complaining about a several-years-old album? If you want them to stop doing mini-songs on their albums, you should notice that they haven't done it again, so there's no point in complaining to them. If you just want to irritate them -- if they even see you letter -- it might do that. They are certainly not going to go back and change "Apollo 18" to suit you. My feeling is that Fingertips was a one-time experiment, just as we will probably not see more Edison wax recordings on future albums or any more songs about Spider. I get the impression that They don't like repeating themselves if They can help it. 2. IMO, the Fingertips section is one of the high points of "Apollo 18" and I wish they would do *more* teensy songlet experiments. Especially entertaining is to listen to A18 with the CD player set to shuffle play. The cassette I listen to in my car, in fact, is recorded from shuffle play. If Leo wants to use his equipment and time to support tmbg-list (and I applaud him for it), then he has a right to stop anything that he considers to be a hassle. One-line posts are considered to be very bad netiquette, and actually, most list-admins can't stand them either. Leo is a very cool person and most of us genuinely appreciate what he's done for TMBG fans. If you have a problem, you need to work it out with Leo and stop pestering us. This seems to happen on every list I get on. Someone does something incredibly annoying, and when the list-admin does something, people complain and say they were "just having fun" or "just kidding around". If you want to have fun or kid around, make your own list (annoy-l?) and you can all make as many one-line posts as you want. Don't bother mailing me back because my opinion's not going to change. Yeah, they're not like TMBG, but still...y'all should expand horizons whenever possible (no offense intended here). Funny thing is, Steph, _Electr-o-Pura_ isn't even their best album (although I have a feeling you know this). Everyone, go out and buy _Painful_ right now....I mean right now. After all, thanks to Matador's wondrous marking down of certain albums, _Painful_ costs a mere $10 new. Oh, and while you're at it, pick up the Pizzicato Five, Superchunk, Guided by Voices, and Pavement (my god, Pavement!!) albums that are marked down as well. If you couldn't tell, i'm kind of a Matador freak. I love the subtle irony of the "biggest" indie label being distributed by a major label, but I won't go there. Matador has some great bands, including a bunch you've probably never heard of. I don't know what the point of this post was...just singing the praises of Hoboken's own Yo La Tengo, I suppose. I haven't looked at it in a couple of days so I'll have to look at it again and post more informationj later. Did anyone receive anything like this? It was on 1 blue piece of paper. Very soon all this will be at my page, that is not yet at the net. By the moment here are the spanish version of Number Three. Anyway, my english is not very good, so if you find mistakes, please don't be angry with me. NUMERO TRES. Well, that's all by now. In a few days, you'll get all the songs of TMBG into spanish at my homepage. !Hasta pronto! -------Fernando Alberich. ------------------------------ From: mjames@greed.loyola.edu (Matthew James) Message-Id: <9711042254.AA26854@greed.loyola.edu> Subject: TMBG: various languages Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 17:54:45 -0500 (EST) Hello, Well it seems that people from all over the world are cropping up and joining the TMBG list, Fernando from Spain, Thorten from Germany, so maybe our ultimate goal is to translate _Number 3_ into every language in the world!
