AND: > There has been some talk here recently of whether or not TMBG's >contract with Elektra is up, and I've just gotten it on good authority >that in fact, they've been dropped. I'd like to think that there will always be a market for TMBG. If this is really the case, at least we can hope they'll end up with someone that will give them some support. What's next? A long rest for the Johns? They certainly deserve it. Is this the beginning of the end or the beginning of a new era? As for the Candy Butchers' full length album "never" being released, I wouldn't bet my life on it. Here's why: Imagine CB gets a new record deal with another label, they are successful and become known and in demand. Do you think the owner of the music, lyrics, recordings, etc. is going to let the tapes stay in a vault or his tool shed (or wherever) when there's money to be made. If someone had an unreleased Jimi Hendrix studio recording , would it just be left to rot? Of course, odds are (despite their talent) they will remain in obscurity. In that case, what value will those recordings have to their current owners? They might as well at least auction them off. Then they have the possiblity of being released by a small label. I suppose its possible the album won't ever see the light of day but saying there's no chance, "none at all" is being overly pessimistic, isn't it? -B O N G O ____________________ "No coffee -- no mariachis!" -Candy Butchers ------------------------------ From: CeltEire@aol.com Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 10:53:47 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <971125105347_-590637073@mrin83.mail.aol.com> Subject: TMBG: Re: tmbg-list Digest #3-328 In a message dated 97-11-25 04:03:19 EST, you write: << "TMBG could kick U2's arse's any day" >> i also think that black 47 could kick U2's ass anyday... anyone agree? kim ------------------------------ From: "AugieWan" Subject: TMBG: Contract no more. I was wondering if anyone has any proof besides "I know someone who knows someone who's really reliable"? This may be the hopeful fool inside me, but I checked all reliable TMBG sites, including Electra's and I don't see anything. I also would like to point out that the Giants probably wouldn't be doing all these Merc Lounge concerts to work on the new album if it wasn't going to happen. It seems like either this is simply a big ballooned rumor, or it's real, but in that case it seems as though the John's probably have a backup plan/label. In talking to people who deal with booking and other fun stuff for the band, a concern is almost always raised about PR. Apparently, Elektra didn't put a ton of cash in promoting the band (hence nearly-secret shows for the Factory tour) and everyone was getting a little upset about that (seeing as the purpose of a band is to perform..). "I Can Hear You" played by Sonic Youth could be - hmmm - ironic, don't you think? I mean, back in those chaotic guitar noise E.V.O.L days, Sonic Youth singing "I can just barely hear you..." or "You won't hear the buzz, but I'm buzzing you in..." with their buzzing fuzz-guitars and all... Argh... Hmmm... True, it does happen the Dead Milkmen went back to Restless after putting out a few albums on Hollywood records. However this is usually only because no other major label will take the band. TMBG have always made the songs they wanted to make and I can't think of any other reason they would move to an indie except for artistic freedom. In any other way (money, distro) they would be limiting themselves. I would like to add to this however that I _would_ rather see Them on an indie label, I just don't think it's too likely. Later in the show, after complaining about the lack of proper confetti distribution (or something to that effect), Flans suggested that "maybe we just shouldn't point the cannon at THAT guy anymore". 2nd show (doors 10:45pm): SPIDER / BIRD SEXXY - UP! Flans had to do the same for the Finished With Lies chords (plus Georgie Girl lyrics). Instead of Istanbul, they played Purple Toupee at the request (or rather, begging) of an audience member. Kind of ironic that they chose to play the request of the ONLY person who had been crowdsurfing that night... but it was definitely a welcome surprise!!! I acquired setlists from both shows, and got the first one signed by the Johns + Hal + Dan. Dan thanked me for the Toblerone 6-pack i gave them, although he really wasn't sure if the Johns liked chocolate (I later saw a roadie with an opened Toblerone sticking out of his pocket, sooo...). Overall, two fantastic shows. Much more entertaining than the Mercury Lounge show i saw earlier this month, and for once I didn't have to leave the country to see one of my favorite bands perform live.
