                         *** ADMINISTRIVIA ***

This notice is posted twice a month to tmbg-list and
tmbg-digest, as well as sent to all new users. Please read
it if you have questions about the list.

The TMBG mailing list is administered by Leo Bicknell <bicknell@ufp.org>.
It provides a forum for discussing They Might Be Giants and Their music.

1) Unsubscribing from the list

It is easy to unsubscribe from this mailing list. If you are subscribed to
the regular, or "bounce" list, send the command

        unsubscribe tmbg-list e-mail@address

in the body of a message to <majordomo@tmbg.org>.

To unsubscribe from the tmbg-digest digested version of the list, send the
command

        unsubscribe tmbg-digest e-mail@address

in the body of a message to <majordomo@tmbg.org>.

"e-mail@address" stands for the email address that is subscribed to the
list. If you are sending the command from the email account that is
subscribed, this part of the command is optional.

If you have problems, send mail to <tmbg-list-approval@tmbg.org>.

2) Subscribing to the list

Follow the instructions above for unsubscribing but
send the word 'subscribe' rather than unsubscribe. :-) Keep
in mind that tmbg-list will send you a copy of each message
as it's written, which may be a lot. tmbg-digest will send
you all the messages written in a day in the middle of the
night. See http://www.tmbg.org/mail-news/ for more information.

3) Sending messages to the list

To send a message to the list just mail it to
tmbg-list@tmbg.org and it will get sent out to everyone.
Please don't mail any chain letters, make money fast
schemes, "me too" messages, or anything else that doesn't
contribute to the discussion about TMBG.

	IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT

When you send a message to the list you are sending
messages to hundreds of people. Make sure that your
message is one that hundreds of people need to read.
Do not send "me too" messages to the list. Do not
send messages about non-tmbg topics to the list. Hold
private conversations in private e-mail. Sending
messages that the list administrator deems off topic
will result in your being removed from the list.

4) The TMBG FAQ

The They Might Be Giants Frequently Asked Questions list is a compilation
of the most requested information about the Johns. It is maintained by John
Relph <relph@engr.sgi.com>. To get the latest copy of the FAQ, you can do
any of the following things. First, it is available on the World Wide Web
at:
        http://reality.sgi.com/relph/music/TMBG-FAQ.html
and, for a plaintext version:
        http://reality.sgi.com/relph/music/TMBG-FAQ
Second, it is posted regularly on the newsgroup alt.music.tmbg.
Third, if you can't get to one of those places, you can mail me
<jchaffer@tmbg.org> and I'll send you a copy.

5) The websites

The unofficial web site, http://www.tmbg.org/ has all sorts
of good TMBG information including information on this mailing
list (http://www.tmbg.org/mail-news/) as well as pointers to where
you can read the list via news. You'll also find lyrics, chords,
and interpretations for many of the songs.

Also try out the Official TMBG Website at: http://www.tmbg.com/

As always, thank you for your mind.

to my knowledge, they have not been on SNL for quite some time, if ever.
most likely they would probably not be on SNL until the release of a new
album. this recent discussion of SNL is speculation about what would be
good songs to play for that venue.

My guess is that since SNL is only on once a week they have to be more
choosy with their musical guests. Generally, tv shows will pick bands
with albums out recently and TMBG does not have one. But perhaps they
want a band that has a single(s) on the radio a lot and therefore will
be sure that the band will be popular enough to be a) recognized and
b) liked.
Since Leno, Letterman, Conan, etc are on every weeknight they need a
musical guest basically 5 days a week and are less choosy. That's not
to say that the bands that are on the talk shows and not on SNL are
worse, it just means that there's probably a few more
less-known/recognized bands on them.
It seems like TMBG show can recognition more and more and I'm sure they
have, especially since they sell albums worldwide and tour worldwide,
but apparently a lot more bands do that than you might think. I'd guess
it has completely to do with how a band's single is doing on the radio.

hey, all --

as i promised earlier, here is a fresh interp of 'the biggest one'. this
interp was inspired by a comment made offhand to the sadly desaparecido
mike leffel implying that 'the biggest one' had sexual overtones. usually
a skeptic of sexual interps, i decided to try to flesh it out (so to
speak) as a joke, and i was surprised at how coherent the interp ended up
becoming. okay, so maybe not the way i present it. anyway, here it is:

* ----------------------------------

* the water running down that pipe
* looks like a snake to me

water is often a sexual metaphor, particularly when it's running down
something. (listen to led zeppelin's 'lemon song' for an example,
although that's lemon juice.) also as an example, there's an old blues
song (the name of which i forget) that has the lyric 'he boiled my first
cabbage, and he boiled it pretty hot / he boiled my first cabbage, and he
boiled it pretty hot / when he put in the bacon, it overflowed the pot'.
then there's the phallic nature of the pipe and the snake. (for what
that's worth, which prolly isn't much.) couple that with the traditional
use of snakes as a metaphor for imminent danger, and you have the
following: this guy is intrigued by sex, but he also views it as
exceptionally dangerous, most likely from the perspective of 'i'm going to
get hurt emotionally by this'.

* by 'doc's sugar bowl' my coffee gets cold
* 'cause i don't want to see that
* i've got no one to blame but my fat self

i don't know what doc's sugar bowl is -- i'd thought it was in one of the
faq's, but i can't find it. i know it's a tv show of some sort or
another. but anyway, it seems as though this guy's procrastinating stuff
(including, but probably not limited to the drinking of coffee) because he
doesn't want to realize he's to blame. of course, he already realizes
he's to blame, so it's not working.

* i've got no one to blame but my fat self
* i'm the biggest one, i'm the biggest one
* i've got no one to blame but my fat self

another possibility for what the blame is about is that: this guy was in a
failed relationship, and the decline/dissolution of that relationship was
his fault. (or it could even be that he just *thinks* it's his fault; no
real difference there from the interp's point of view.) anyway, the
support for this possibility comes in the next verse:

* should have changed that stupid lock
* should have thrown away the key
* no, no, not i, i will survive
* right down here on my knees...

this is such a direct quote, it's not even funny. there was that whole
'cage and aquarium'/'age of aquarius' thing... this is much more direct.
gloria gaynor's 'i will survive' has a section that goes:

* and so you're back, from outer space
* i just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
* should have changed that stupid lock
* should have made you keep the key
* if i'd've known for just one second you'd be back to bother me
* go on, now, go! walk out the door!
* just turn around now cause you're not welcome anymore
* weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
* think i'd crumble?
* think i'd lay down and die?
* oh no, not i! i will survive!
* oh as long as i know how to love i know i'll be alive....

etc., etc....

so, lemme esplain... no, no, there ees no time, lemme sum up.

guy. bad relationship. sex involved. relationship over. guy in the
throes of despair, self-doubt, guilt, and bad coffee. there ya go.

I think someone asked that in the Q&A on the official site and they said
they hadn't been on SNL. (but I'm almost certain that if they were
invited, they'd go on)

I have a book about the show and looked up all the musical guests
(there's a list of all shows that gives host and musical guest) and TMBG
didn't appear at all prior to 1994, and I've been a fan since then, so
I've been looking for it. it hasn't happened. it may not happen.

That is because True Type indeed sucks. I'm not trying this as a bad post,
but True Type has various problems to it. If you can find a copy of Adobe
Type Manager you can use Post Script fonts, wich are good.

okay. i just tried it again, and let me update my description of the
problem. i have in my posession a file entitled TMBFont.sea and a file
entitled TMBFONT_.TTF. i can't get the .sea file expanded, and i can't
get the .ttf file to be recognized. perhaps i should point out here that
the .ttf file may be windows truetype, in which case does somebody here
have something that can convert windows truetype to a mac format? but
even if that's the case, i still don't understand why i can't expand the
.sea file.
