Yes the cancellation was a sad ordeal, but they've been on for a long time now. Why, I remember when they were just a local thing on KTMA here in the cities, but.... It must be obvious that I love Time Bandits, and I can often be heard saying "Mom! Dad! It's evil! Don't touch it." But then I get those blank stares, the same reaction I get when I mention TMBG. Then I'm forced to sing Istanbul or Particle Man (with which a jig is accompanied) and some people's eyes light up. Other's stay dark and murky. For those whose eyes DO light up, I forcefully shove Apollo 18 or John Henry in their hands (I figure they are NOT quite ready for the Pink Album or Lincoln) and shoo them off to enjoy. Essentially, MP3 is a sound format, just like WAVs. However, it's different because it uses a compression technology to make the file small while still being high quality. More info on how MP3's work can be found at: http://www.mp3.com/faq/ You need a special player to listen to mp3's. I use www.winamp.com Goodnoise sells the right for you to download the mp3s from their site. This is implimented by password-protected pages and such. However, the mp3s themselves are not password-protected, so once someone downloads it from Goodnoise, they could post it somewhere else, free for all. This is one of the problems about an mp3 album, in that piracy of it is that much easier. -Jay From owner-tmbg-list@tmbg.org Tue Apr 13 14:29:20 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by ussenterprise.ufp.org (8.9.2/8.9.2) id OAA18154 for tmbg-list-outgoing; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 14:29:20 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from owner-tmbg-list@tmbg.org) Received: from mailsorter-105-2.iap.bryant.webtv.net (mailsorter-105-2.iap.bryant.webtv.net [209.240.198.118]) by ussenterprise.ufp.org (8.9.2/8.9.2) with ESMTP id OAA18145 for ; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 14:29:19 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from GhostKrabb@webtv.net) Received: from postoffice-243.iap.bryant.webtv.net (postoffice-243.iap.bryant.webtv.net [209.240.199.109]) by mailsorter-105-2.iap.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.8/ms.gso.08Dec97) with ESMTP id LAA02034; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 11:29:18 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from production@localhost) by postoffice-243.iap.bryant.webtv.net (8.8.8/po.gso.24Feb98) id LAA00007; Tue, 13 Apr 1999 11:29:18 -0700 (PDT) X-WebTV-Signature: 1 ETAsAhR5wN/NwjLRl7MGWVdelY50J1qwqwIUSAWVGyVaO8bLo6FOF88dV7W8OII= From: GhostKrabb@webtv.net (Dexter Flansburgh) Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 11:29:18 -0700 (PDT) To: tmbg-list@tmbg.org (They Might Be Giants) Subject: Re: TMBG: Today's the big day! Absolutely, YES. It was my introduction to TMBG. The scene: My last summer at home (1986) before going away to college. A good friend of mine comes down to visit from Ohio. We are up at about 2 am, talking, with Mtv playing on the TV in the background. We happen to pause in our conversation just as "Don't Let's Start" comes on...We watch in awe. We both decide it is *the* coolest video either of us has ever seen in our entire Mtv-watchin' lives. An historic moment, to be sure. However, it would be another two years before I actually ran across an album release ("Lincoln", natch) and thought to myself "Hey, it's that band again!" And, I know they must've shown the video at least a couple more times as my friend and I (separately) both managed to get it taped eventually that same summer. Surely this is not a slam against TMBG, because I would never do such a thing ("stupid fucks"= university activities organization of BGSU). I just feel betrayed and like I was lied to. I also posted a comment to MTV ~ ~ that I heard the "Don't Let's Start" vid was still available for request, but told them I would really love it if they would play "Birdhouse." I also mentioned that I thought if they would play anything by TMBG, that the band might suddenly gain some kind of cool mainstream popularity (albeit temporarily, I'm sure, and I hope) :-) But I'm not sure that massive popularity is what John & John would want anyway. The packed arenas! The groupies! The headaches! And worst of all: The burnout! Run Away, Run Away! With most bands that run through Total Request Live these days (with the exception of Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, 98 Degrees and Britney Spears--my daughter's fave bands *sigh*-- what can I tell you, Lamberly is 13 years old, and the only fashion plate in my household), the popularity factor dies down after about one or two weeks. Those that survive longer than that, don't hold the kids' hearts for long. Remember "The Spice Girls"? The only remnant of them that's left at my daughter's middle school is the high shoes. And Lam nearly broke her neck the other day, when she tried to walk across the room with her pair untied!... About TMBG vids: The last time I saw the Birdhouse vid (a total of twice I saw them play it, both times around 5 pm or so), was back in 1990 or so. I saw "Don't Let's Start" once, don't remember what time of day, right after the video was released. I taped "Istanbul" off of 120 Minutes on MTV, I think it was around 1993 or 1994? I checked, and I still have the tape. Karen "where's that smacking, hitty, poundy thingy?" Riley MuseKJ@aol.com P.S. Now I'm writing: Oooh! I think it should be Spy. For some reason, when I think gold women, and sombreros, that song pops into my had. Mmmmm, there it is again. And Sean Connery should make a cameo in the video. Or TMBG could just write a new song trying there hardest to sound "bubble-gummy." You know what would've been cool? If They came to us, the people/fans to decide all their video plots and stuff. I mean, we do have alot of very imaginative people on this list. In fact, you guys are the most briliant bunch of people I've ever met! They should get more suggestions from their fans, don't you think? me, Dexburger, who doesn't care if he's in Special Ed, 'cause me say I briliant. copecopecopecopecopecopecopecopecope Go here: http://www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan/totalrequest2/playmy/playmy.tin?sPollName=reqmain and/or call, TOLL FREE at 1-800-Dial-MTV to request They Might Be Giants' video "Don't Let's Start" on Tuesday, April 13th between 3:00 & 3:30 p.m. pacific, 4:00 & 4:30 p.m. mountain, 5:00 & 5:30 p.m. central or 6:00 & 6:30 p.m. eastern time so it will be shown on MTV's "Total Request Live" 'cause They deserve it!
