"Hello, Hello" is the same version on Unsupervised, and Fried is credited as producer on that song on the album. I always thought that it sounded like Flans sung that song, though, so that's why Fried isn't credited as vocals on it. As for "Lullabye" it does sound different than how Flans usually sounds, so it might be Fried. I much prefer the Water Street Music Hall, now that I've been there and know what it's like. For those of you who don't know what this place is like, it's gigantic, with a vast upper level, all constructed out of giant crude blocks of wood and poorly lit. From the outside, the building looks like a boarded up warehouse. The men's bathroom radiated intense redness, so I didn't even go in there. Nonetheless it's a fascinating place. I stood on the upper level, at the front in the middle, and wore a 1992 Apollo 18 tour shirt. Before the show, after making the three hour drive, we wanted to get some food but didn't know that it's actually really hard to find a decent place to eat in Rochester. We ended up walking all over the place until we accidentally found a part of town called High Falls, which was not at all creepy like the rest of town, and we found a place to eat there. Afterwards, we ran across a freeway as it was the quickest route back to the club, and promptly struck up conversations with some people in the crowd. This was an all ages show so there were a lot of kids with parents, and unaccompanied teenagers. Aside from the moms and dads, it looked like my friend and I were the oldest ones there (mid 20's). After a bit, they let us in, and everyone who was under 21 not only got a huge hand stamp saying UNDER 21 but were forced to pay another $2.00 to get in on top of what they had already paid for the tickets. Hmm. Perhaps this was to make up for the loss of alcohol sales to these members of the audience, though they could have made up some of that loss if the American government would drop the drinking age to 19 as it is here in Canada. But anyway there's nothing to stop an underage patron fron buying a beer at this club if he knows someone of age who is willing to buy a beer for him. Years passed, then Michael Shelley played. His band is good, the songs all sound the same, the final jam session was a lot of fun, I was glad when it was over. Several more years passed, then our boys took the stage to the strains of Dr. Evil, which sounds, muffled as it was over the club PA, like a really cool song. Some information as to the set list and other things has already been posted so I won't go into that here. However opening with She's An Angel was very cool. Halfway through She Thinks She's Edith Head, the PA made a loud crackling sound and went dead, meaning we could hear the instruments but not Flans' vocals. However he kept on singing, and it is to his credit that for the most part I could STILL HEAR HIM, even in the balcony. Nonetheless he got pissed off and they did come back when the problem was fixed, and promptly launched into the song again from about the halfway mark, Flans this time leaving his guitar alone and just singing as he walked around the stage with the mike. It looked as if he was trying to overcome a mounting frustration, and for a while it looked like maybe the show just wasn't going to come off, but then it became clear that the show was going to be a singularly odd and exciting experience. New songs: Cyclops Rock, It's So Loud In Here, Edith Head. I like Edith Head and Cyclops Rock the best. It's So Loud In Here is aptly titled for in their attempt to rock the place out, our boys do crank the knobs to eleven. In my opinion a TMBG show is currently way too loud, and doesn't need to be that loud. When the vocals disappear, you've gone too far. But that's just the way I feel. So it was a relief when they played a quiet song like Mammal, and what a nice surprise it was to hear Mammal. Particle Man contained the Total Eclipse Of The Heart bit, and James K. Polk included the confetti cannon though we were not warned of its presence before hand. Interestingly the air was filled with bits of confetti for almost the entire duration of the song. There were some attempts at moshing during the show, and some crowd surfing: yes, one boy's exploits nearly cost him his pants, and when he landed, he landed hard. Another boy was pulled out of the crowd by security and chastised before being released. Perhaps due to all of this, Flans asked us only to jump up and down and not conga during No One Knows My Plan. WDTSS featured switched vocal parts, Whistling In The Dark featured Flans on big-ass bass drum, and Exquisite Dead Guy made good use of the mirror ball as John and John moved the puppet heads around it causing the two spotlights to light it up, filling the room with starry specks. Quite a nice repeat of the same effect witnessed at last winter's Opera House show in Toronto. From my vantage point in the upper level, I could see a lot of interesting things happening in the crowd, such as the group of boys near the front first sticking their fingers in their own noses, and then in each other's noses, then high fiving each other for no apparent reason, and trying to start the wave. One of these kids was the nearly pantsless crowd surfer, and I had been talking to him outside the show earlier and he seemed okay but then during the show he went nuts and by the end he was a crazed maniac. "Did you see me crowdsurfing!" was all he could say to me when I found him later. Watching the crowd both before and during the show proved to be ceaselessly entertaining. There's no way for me to express the unusual energy of this show. I've seen a lot of TMBG shows and this one, great as it was, also possessed more of the crazy and absurd than most. It was as if the presence of the venue and the nature of the crowd conspired to produce a show which devolved into near-insanity. The Spy improv was just plain nuts, songs wouldn't end but in a Monty Python-esque way just sort of fold into the next song, and after a while it seemed as if they just lost all worries and any formal composure which may remain in other shows. Flans even fucked up the words of New York City, stopped, informed us of his mistake, and then went back and did it right, but the band never stopped playing. But my favourite part of the show was their brilliantly reworked version of Istanbul, driven by flamenco guitar and totally excellent. I love when they find a new way to perform one of their old chestnuts, instead of just tossing it from the show, and this was as cool an approach to this song as the first time I ever heard them play the fast version of WDTSS. Suffice it to say, it was an excellent show. I've left stuff out I'm sure, but there's no way I could describe everything. All the little things I've left out are all the little things that mean so much in every show to everyone there, and which cannot be articulated, or perhaps should not be. When you're at your next show, watch the crowd, explore the venue, take it all in, and pay attention. You'll be glad you did! It flashed up on the screen several times, but never long enough for me to see what song it was. Later it showed a screenshot of winamp and the words "They Might Be Giants" were scrolling across the file name display. Just thought I'd share :) --Jason-- ------------------------------ Message-ID: <002001be9387$e67be5a0$27bf97d0@me> From: "Chris Campbell" Subject: TMBG:5/1 Show at Wheaton. -Cry :-( Date: Sat, 1 May 1999 00:05:48 -0400 I just went 400 miles for nothing:-( I went to wheaton and they started playing at 5pm!!!! I got there a little after 6pm- and they were done!!!!!!!!!!! I missed the confetti cannon and everything:-( I did see Dan W. and I talked to him for about 10min. and got 2 sigs. And finally John+John came out and I was only able to get Flansy to sign my shirt! I was in line to have Linnell sign my shirt and I was the person in front of me happened to be the last person to get a signature!! People were getting pieces of Cardboard and photo-copied promo posters signed. I did shake JL's hand. You can't believe how mad I am. I spent like 7 hours driving and I wasted $50 on gas and stuff (I had to pay my parents for gas -and dinner:-( GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR- And don't think I didn't try to find out when it started! I searched Wheaton's website for hours, asked the list (U guys) twice and e-mail 3 people who's e-mail addresses are on the website, I called wheaton "We don't know" (They didn't know anything) The Only thing I had to go by was my friends sister goes there and said concerts usually start around 7 and the band usually doesn't come on 'till 9. When I talked to Dan W. (He is so cool!) I could of found out were they all were eating- But that's to much like stalking (no offense to the guy who went to the restaurant to see TMBG:-) Well I'm tired- good night! -Chris [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 May 1999 00:50:23 -0400 From: Destin Berthelot Subject: Re: TMBG:5/1 Show at Wheaton. -Cry :-( Message-id: <372BD98F.24691643@rollins.edu> Maybe you don't want to hear this, maybe you do, but trust me... It could be worse. I don't think I've told my story here before, but now I will. Maybe it'll cheer up Chris, if nothing else. Until I went to college here in Orlando four years ago, I lived in Pensacola, FL. You can check tmbg.net to see how close TMBG ever played to there. Not very. Add to that the fact that I could only find out about TMBG concerts from the info club in those pre-net days, and you get an idea of how often I got a chance to go see them from when I first discovered the band in mid-'92 (I saw the tiny toons vids in '90, but thought they weren't a real band) until 1994. That year, I found out they were playing in Athens, GA. My recently converted friend and I got his dad (we were cool) to us drive NINE hours to see the band. We met friends along the way, got a little lost, finally found the place, saw the marquee with big fat THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS plastered on it. We stand outside for a scant few minutes. A guy comes out and says "half the band is sick, and they're not going to be able to play." After it dawned on us that he wasn't f*cking with our heads, we get refunds, manage to track down my friend's dad and immediately drive home in silence. Quite the experience. And there's MORE! May 1995: The same friend and I buy tickets to Zephyrfest, in new orleans. 3 hour drive. TMBG cancels a week before the event. We go anyway, for the hell of it, and get to see Bush before they hit it really big. Yeah, that's a fair trade. Oct. 1996: Finally, a real chance! I'm in Orlando now, and they're going to play in Gainesville Friday night (3 hrs), and Jacksonville (3.5 hrs) Saturday night. Saturday morning, we have to take the CLAST test, and they're scheduled to go on at like 1 am sat. morning. We decide to go Saturday night. We take the CLAST (which you college kids know we could well have slept through and still passed), and drive to Jax. We go to the show in this tiny crappy hot basement-size "club," get to the front row, sit through the very loud and eventually annoying Candy Butchers. Finally, TMBG comes out! There's TMBG! They played Subliminal, and James K Polk, and a new song called New York City, and now they're playing Twistin', and what's wrong with Linnell? Why's he all hunched over the keyboard? They go offstage to "take five." Flans comes back and says they "have to cancel the gig." We are not offered our money back. An asshole from high school I had the misfortune of running into at the show gets a drumstick. I snag a setlist and mourn the loss of all the songs I didn't get to hear. As a footnote, they were bumped up in the Friday night schedule and had played a great show that night at like 8 or so. Then there are the happy endings. April 97, we go to St. Petersburg FL and see them in a totally cool-ass outdoor venue. I get to hear the soundcheck from the street, I'm in the front row for the whole show. It's a great concert. We convert my friend's Hungarian exchange student in a scant few hours (he wasn't going to go to the show that night, but then I played my new Live in NYC!!! CD in the car on the way down). March 98, they play Orlando and I get to interview Linnell for my college radio station for about 20 min instead of the scheduled 10. I sound like a vapid idiot, but I have the class not to bring up the first three TMBG "concerts" I attempted to go to. Again, I'm in the front row for an even better concert. So there ya go, Chris... you made out pretty well compared to my initial attempts, and I'm sure you've seen them before and will again. It'll probably be all better. Buck up. Close your eyes and whistle, that's the thing... Destin > Chris Campbell wrote: > > I just went 400 miles for nothing:-( > I went to wheaton and they started playing at 5pm!!!!
