Hello all. Well, I wanted to hear what you all thought of the e-mail I sent to MTV's 120 Minutes this morning: Subj: For Matt Pinfield concerning "They Might Be Giants" Date: 5/25/99 10:07:22 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: MuseKJ To: MINUTES120 Dear Matt: I am a very big fan of 120 Minutes, and have been for some time. I am wondering if there is some way MTV could make the group "They Might Be Giants" more widely known to the public through your network? Matt, I've seen a lot of shows, and TMBG put on the best concert I have ever seen in my life, on May 15 of this year, at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. They are pure musical genius to so many people...we would really love to see the Giants (John Linnell and John Flansburgh) get the recognition that they have truly deserved for so long. They are kicking out better tunes then ever, and I know if more people saw TMBG's videos on MTV (especially during the daytime), they would be as popular as The Dave Matthews Band or Ben Folds Five have become. Please, Matt, can you do anything to help us out? Show this letter to whoever needs to see it...we fans (who have become rather large and rabid in number) are absolutely starving to see more TMBG! (and there's NO WAY you're going to the plank--you're way too nice--the only people on My List are: the person who sent that John Flansburgh death scare and Mike Leffel...well, ok, I guess I was just kidding about Mike Leffel). I think your letter was very good, and a very nice idea. However, I highly doubt it will make much of an impact. Perhaps, there is some small chance that you planted the idea into this Matt person's head (sorry, I don't watch MTV much), and maybe he'll go check TMBG out, and maybe like them, and then maybe he'll decide to play Them like once. :-) As for your idea about Them getting popular like Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds Five, well, um...personally I think DMB is a little TOO popular and I tend to dislike them just because of that (plus I don't really like their music anyway...I think it it borders on lite rock/elevator music at times, which is a very bad thing). I do really love BFF, but they aren't the superstars that DMB is, and they have just plain awesome music. But what I'm trying to say is, wouldn't TMBG lose a little bit of their charm if they became very popular? Already I tend to groan a little bit at concerts when they play Particle Man, Birdhouse, and Istanbul. Of course if They did get popular, I'd still love them as much as ever, and I'd be very happy for the Johns. But I think part of what people like about TMBG is that not everyone's heard of them. my 2 cents, Diana ------------------------------ Message-ID: <001901bea721$d3b582c0$5999e7ce@z0n4g0> From: "balloon" <balloon@netheaven.com> Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: Mp2 HELP? Well, apparently, Maddona has a song on the new Austin Powers movie called "Beautiful Stranger." Laura said that she heard it on the radio, and after it's play, the D.J. said that it's the theme song to the new Austin Powers movie. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Dr. Evil supposed to be the theme? How low will Maddona go to get more exposure? Now, could this have just been a mistake by the D.J., or were we misinformed of the whole situation? >> Well, there's no rule that says the theme song of a movie has to be the opening music (though that's usually the case}, and this "Beautiful Stranger" song must be the song that is being highlighted, so as the soundtrack single, so it's natural to assume it was plugged as such to the radio stations (and as we all know, "Dr Evil was added to the movie too late to make it onto the soundtrack, grrr} . Anastasia e-mailed me the cool idea of turning the 120 Minutes letter into an online petition, and I think the above way would be the most effective way of getting our thoughts across, en masse. If any of you have a better way of accomplishing this, please e-mail me with your ideas. I guess I've had to sit through one too many Total Request Live Countdowns and Backstreet Boys interviews (and now egads -- Jennifer Lopez and Jesse Camp videos), as my daughter seems to put MTV on a lot nowadays. Well, I've decided to let my thoughts be known to those guys down at "Music Television" that I feel they are definitely missing the boat concerning my favorite band, and by cracky, I'm going to get them to listen if I have to go down to my best friend Rodger's house and meet that Mr. Pinfield myself...... because you see, dear people, Rodger lives with Matt's ex and daughter -- and Matt comes by for visitation, don'tcha know. I'm tempted to just go down there and put a copy of "Direct From Brooklyn" in Mr. Pinfield's hand, and start a conversation with him about what a great live band they are, the unmistakable genius of the band's life's work, etc., etc., etc. Why I'd be a....TMBGSpy! Would you believe a Mission from God? Eh, it would never work. Well, I'll tell you what...the next time I'm down at Rodger's, I'll bring all this up. Rodg will get a big smirking smile on his face, knowing that I'm up to no good again, and he'll be right, as usual. I can see me begging my friend for info now. <Heh> Karen "Fun, Goddamn It!" However, I highly doubt it will make much of an impact. Perhaps, there is some small chance that you planted the idea into this Matt person's head (sorry, I don't watch MTV much), and maybe he'll go check TMBG out, and maybe like them, and then maybe he'll decide to play Them like once. :-) As for your idea about Them getting popular like Dave Matthews Band and Ben Folds Five, well, um...personally I think DMB is a little TOO popular and I tend to dislike them just because of that (plus I don't really like their music anyway...I think it borders on lite rock/elevator music at times, which is a very bad thing). But I think part of what people like about TMBG is that not everyone's heard of them. my 2 cents, Diana >> Oooo...some very valid points here. I have been debating that damned if They do (appear with more frequency on MTV -- not overplayed, mind you, just enough so most people will know who they are if you bring them up), and damned if They don't argument with myself as well, lately. I guess I was just thinking of the Johns living rich and wealthy into their old age, and being remembered in the history books as being one of the most important bands of the 80's and 90's...but the worst thing to come with the fame has got to be that deal with the major label -- a move that I know has majorly disappointed J & J in the past...and Mr. Leffel, I was a huge fan of R.E.M. from their inception to the day Bill Berry left the group. I even refrained from seeing them live because I thought it would ruin some kind of musical ideal I found through their records. I do believe R.E.M. getting on the Warner Brothers label had a lot to do with my gradual disinterest in the band. (I didn't even buy their last two albums.) So, Diana, I completely understand and support your belief that added fame and exposure might just kill off some of the very personal charm that is They Might Be Giants. In a lot of ways fame is like selling your soul to the devil. "You can have all this, but in return you must give me your _____." I guess it really all depends on what the Johns want for themselves...as long as they're happy, I'm happy. :-) Thanks Diana, for bringing up those good points. Please cut & paste, and add your name to the following, then forward it to everyone you know: This petition has been started by fans of the band They Might Be Giants in attempts to get them the respect that They deserve. Ultimately, our current goal is to get them on MTV. When the time is right, the petiton will be forwarded to Matt Pinfield, host of MTV's 120 Minutes, and the only MTV team member who we believe could be a fan of They Might Be Giants. We are hoping that he will be overwhelmed by the tremendous love and support we have for They Might Be Giants, and then end up putting them into heavier rotation on 120 Minutes, and hopefully other MTV slots. Even if you don't know of this band, please know that they have done more than enough throughout their careers in music to deserve this. Please put your E-mail address under the previous petiton supporter's, and pass this on. If you have recieved this E-mail on the date of July 7th, 1999, please send it to Sensurround@webtv.net. What noticeable difference is there sans Berry? While I can only listen to oh... say 65% of REM songs (whereas 99% TMBG) and admittedly I haven't bought the last two albums either (Hello Nurse! Goodbye Wallet!) I can't see much of a difference personally. But then again, I'm a art nut, not really a music person anyhow. ^_^ As for the Live thing... when I first heard TMBG 'live' (not on an album) debuting Snail Shell on MTv, I cringed my sad weener off in utter shock. Luckily, I had another corn dog in the microwave, and I got used to it. ^__^ I had just (stupidly) assumed that the album versions was how TMBG actually sounded. Oh, the sad, oft disappointing life I lead. Too much 'everything ends up right at the end of the show' tv for me as a kid. Perception _is_ 99% of reality, after all. (1% is gravy) Mike "Poke'Bots!
