All of there albums can be easily found on the spongebath website, and i recommend there new one called In the New Old Fasioned Way. Every BFF fan should try these guys out, its pure piano-pop perfection. Another cool band that should be mentioned( since they are on the same indie label with Fl.Oz.) is the band SELF. These guys are an interessting mix of many styles of music, but overall they just simply ROCK! SELF has even covered songs like Santa's Beard at some of their concerts. I think any TMBG fan would love either of these two bands if your into truly unique music ( which of course you must be if you listen to TMBG). This was always confusing to me as a kid. "4 of 2" is four *before* two. 2:04 is "4 after 2". After you pass the half hour mark, you can start using "of" for the next hour. So, 3:25 is "25 after 3", but 3:35 is "25 of 4". Don't ask me why. I think it's silly, buy 'tis the way it's done. It's not a regional thing either...I think it's just not used much anymore because of digital clocks coming into common usage in the last 20 years or so. Just MHO. I think a live album should be a way of > saying "this is what this band sounded like at this hour on this day at > this place on this stage" or whatever.... Culling tracks from 15 zillion This is a classic discussion. Phish's first live album ("A Live One", double CD in fact) were tracks taken from the fall '94 tour, but definitely not random ones -- the band kept a diary for the entire tour, and the four of them slimmed down 300 possible tracks to a mere 14. Because of the amount of listening and deciding involved in going through that many hours of tape, the band decided "well, we're never doing that again (probably)" and the next live album ("Slip Stich and Pass") was a selection of songs from one concert, 3/1/97 at the Markthalle in Germany (yes, I know too much). But here's the key point: the songs on A Live One were all edited together so it SOUNDS like it's all one excellent concert (at the end of disc one Trey says "we'll be back in 10 minutes" and at the end of disc 2 he says goodbye and outro music plays over the "PA"), and even in the liner notes it says "Recorded at the Clifford Ball, 1994" which is a concert that never happened. :) So if They would have done that with STD, it would have sounded like one concert and flowed better and perhaps I wouldn't have needed to post this entire huge paragraph that's mostly off-topic. > places (and about as many different line-ups) and including way too many > novelty tracks (the lobby-recorded Meet James Ensor, all the Apes tracks) > really hurt it. On a side note, I saw BF5 on some Hard Rock Live special on VH1 and toward the end, everything got silly and Ben kept talking in that voice, and you know just about every yuppie in that audience was scratching their head going, "What the hell... isn't this that band that did that song about abortion?" And I'll put my opinion on the STD thing, because I never can shut up... STD was the third full-length TMBG album I got (the first two being Apollo 18 and Flood, although now I have all but Then) and this opened me up to various TMBG songs from various albums and times. Therefore, when I went to stores, I'd look at the other albums and get them based on how I liked the songs on there from STD (ex: "Ooh, She's An Angel. I liked that. I'll get this album."). And I still like it a whole lot even after I've gotten the others. But that's me. What do I know? I'll tell ya what - NOTHING! HA! I know I've said this before, but I don't think that _Severe Tire Damage_ was really intended to be a typical live album. It was a collection of remade (and new) songs, many of which were recorded live. If you don't like that kind of thing, that's fine, but comparing it to other live albums doesn't really seem fair. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan Mulac "In stereo, where available" DeHoff DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/5447/ _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Most live versions of "Don't Let's Start" that I've heard sound almost exactly like the pink album version. I think putting it on _Severe Tire Damage_ would have been a waste of a track. That aside, I think I've heard that the Johns wanted to put DLS on the live album, but "kept messing it up," or something like that. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/5447/ _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. The version of "Don't Let's Start" on Dr. Spock's Backup Band is great and has a slightly different sound than the album version...the one on the Mountain Stage show is still my personal favorite live performance of that song. I'm glad they didn't use the one from Live NYC!! as they did with a few other tracks...yikes, what a terrible version. I can't believe that with as many performances as they've recorded over the years, they couldn't find a good version of DLS... To babble some more, I would like to bring up my stupid idea again about a Hello Records-like service officially releasing live & rare TMBG material bimonthly or quarterly. :-) -Adam At 06:46 PM 6/2/99, Nathan Mulac DeHoff wrote: > >Really? That aside, I think I've > heard that the Johns wanted to put DLS on the live album, but "kept messing > it up," or something like that. really? I think the live version of Don't Let's Start has much more energy than on the album. The drums are more audible, the keyboard part is more interesting, the whole song is faster, and Linnell almost always does something weird for the nonsense part and the "I don't want to live in this world anymore..." parts... I think part of what can't be captured on the live album, though, is seeing Flans jumping around on stage with his guitar while they play the song.
