I came out of temporary list retirement for this thread, since collecting hypothetical band names is somewhat of a passion of mine, and now the thread seems to have died down. Oh, well. I might as well use this opportunity to plug my band name list: http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/bandname.html It really needs to be updated, as do most of my pages. Maybe I'll add some of the names suggested in this thread. >The Music Factory That sounds too much like C&C Music Factory. >Now In Color Actually, that would probably be a better name for an album than for the band itself. How bout >"Ty'n-er up" or "Adam Aunt" (ha ha) but seriously-- Well, some of us (i.e., the people who say it correctly) don't pronounce "ant" in "aunt" in the same way. Speaking of Adam Ant, it was stated in my listening appreciation class the other day that one of the differences between the Romantic and Classical periods was that one emphasized content, and the other form. The odd thing is that the TMBG song describes Adam Ant as being "New Romantic" and emphasizing form, yet the Romantic period was when music started to center more around content. I guess the New Romantic is different from the Old. -- Eat your broccoli, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20000328160017.95892.qmail@hotmail.com> From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: TMBG: Working Undercover for the Man of La Mancha Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 16:00:17 GMT Adam Tyner: >IIRC, the phrase "they might be giants" isn't even in the movie, although >it's pretty close. If memory serves, there's a line that goes something >like "but to think that they might be..." I haven't seen the movie, but I've read much of _Don Quixote_ (I didn't quite finish it), and I'm pretty sure no such line appears in there. Of course, there might be (ha ha) different translations from the original Spanish, but I'm pretty sure that Quixote is SURE that the windmills are giants; it isn't until later in the novel that he adjusts his beliefs to account for different ways of looking at reality. So the line probably comes from the movie, not the novel. This certainly doesn't mean that the Johns aren't familiar with the novel, though; I'm sure They are. The exact origin of TMBG's name is this; John & John had a friend who had himself a ventriloquism act. This gentleman had gone through a number of names for his own act including They Might Be Giants, which he procured from the film. John & John liked the name and asked him if they could use it, and he said yes. End of story. The Johns explain this in an interview on WNRN, a Charlottesville radio station on 9/12/97. Three guys and a girl (which won't be the name). Heavily TMBG influenced. Called "Werm". Electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, violin, keyboard, drum pad. The way it works is on songs w/both acoustic and electric guitar, the violinist/keyboard player plays the drum pad. On songs w/only acoustic guitar, I, the electric guitar player, play the drum pad.
