If he's a TMBG fan, that's a recommendation, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if They were Terry Pratchett fans. Anybody who starts a book with a line like "In the beginning, there was nothing, which proceeded to explode." would probably be appreciated by TMBG, and by TMBG fans across the cosmos. Especially if you like Hitch-hikers' Guide to the Galaxy, but even if you don't, I'm willing to bet that if you appreciate TMBG you'll love Pratchett's Discworld series. Here endeth the sermon. What bizarre parallel universe do you live in where they actually play TMBG songs on the radio?... especially that one! Around here the only time you might hear TMBG on the radio, is on KROQ's "Flashback Lunch" an oldies show that is on around noon (when most people are at school or work). And then its only going to be "Don't Let's Start" or "Birdhouse in Your Soul". Playing something like "We Want a Rock" would shake things up too much and get someone fired. >but when the song ended, the DJ said that this weekend, being >April Fool's day weekend and all, they would be playing a lot >of music like TMBG because it's so "whimsical" What?! Even "quirky" isn't so bad compared to some things I've heard them called lately. Someone on this list described "Robot Parade" as their "cutest song ever" as if being cute was their goal. Meanwhile, over on The Sugarplastic list, this guy was naming his favorite albums of each year of the 90's. For 1990 he named "Flood" as the year's best album. Then he ruined by describing "The best novelty album of all time!" In summary, TMBG is a cutesy novelty act. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: 30 Mar 2000 09:07:00 -0800 Message-ID: <-1257715278ggr@wlg.com> From: Bongo Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: About TMBG's name..... When I wrote that a couple of days ago, I was kinda joking because They Might Be Giants (the band) *IS* referred to in a work of modern literature. And I mean BESIDES Mad Magazine and Terry Pratchett. I was telling a friend of mine, how much I like TMBG. She never heard of them but a few weeks laters she told me, "that band you like is in a book we have to read in my literature class". Then I remembered that I had read about that novel on the TMBG newsgroup once. Apparently, its required reading in a lot of colege lit classes throughout the country. Thing is, I can't remember the name. I think it has something to do with Native Americans. Anyone read it. The most I've heard (which isn't much) was on KROQ. I have trouble getting Y100 in. The signal usually gets overwhelmed by a Banda station. I think they underwent a format change last year. They either got more like KROQ or more like Star98. I can't remember which. There was once a time when KROQ played first run TMBG songs (in the late 80's/early 90's). I've also heard TMBG once on 91X ( from Baja). In the summer, you can sometimes pick up the signal in the L.A. area. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 20:07:18 -0500 (EST) From: "Robin \"Big Wicker Ventriloquist\" Connell" Subject: Re: Non-TMBG: Big Wicker Ventriloquist Message-ID: On Thu, 30 Mar 2000 karinh@sterl.com wrote: > Robin sez: > >> The question is how can I rap heavily with a name like 'Big Wicker > Ventriloquist'?
