I got a new screen name! Not that the marority of you care, but there are a few people on this list that IM me occasionally. Anyway, my new instant message name is JenkiJon383. Jenkins is my last name, and I just thought JenkyJon sounded funny, so I made it a screen name and threw in some meaningful numbers.

On a side note, this is the first name of any sort I have ever used for any computer function that has not included a reference to Mr. Bean. Interesting. Not really. Sorry. I'll go away now.

Basically, we have been called a bunch of spoiled "Gotta have it NOW" brats
by Emusic and Flans...which in my opinion, is how we are behaving. We arent
even giving this thing a chance before we rip it to shreds as to how crappy
it is. We have been spoiled by how prolific these guys are and demand new
product every day. Try being an XTC "an album every 5 years" fan..or think
back to the ancient days of the beatles where all you got were official
releases every year or so...ih the humanity..how did we ever survive.
Remember folks, no one is putting a gun to your head to join tmbg
Unlimited..so lets give this thing a chance to work..get your fix by
downloading the excellent flood show from tdk's site!

Thanks for posting this Erich...

In the interests of honoring tradition, how could you possibly have passed over
the opportunity of being JenkiBean383 ?? Even funnier-sounding, too!

I didn't see the Emusic reply as calling us brats in any way. I do agree with you that no one seems to appreciate the huge amount of stuff TMBG has been releasing (much of it free). Everyone is talking about what's available but few ever stop to discuss the actual songs.

Nonetheless, considering that I'm giving them $10 a month, I feel Emusic is obligated to explain the deal. The way it was presented was confusing. The details may have been given in the fine print somewhere but that's not good enough. Besides, any business should be grateful to get customer feedback.

To Emusic's credit, they gave an amazingly detailed response to the question. It's as if they really care. I would have expected them to reply with something like: "Thank you for your valued comments. We currently have no further information on [insert topic here]. Thank you for choosing Emusic." The response they gave made it sound like they had conference with Flansburgh just to answer Erich's question.

a couple of things.

1) i heard "See the Constillation" on CD101.com's top 2001 on monday.

2) CD101.com is also (for all central ohioans - including me, at college)
giving away a grand prize trip to see TMBG in concert AND a taping of
Malcolm in the Middle. all you have to do is watch Malcolm (sp ?) ... [not
hard to do] for the month of january and look for the cd101.com logo.

i know i talk about these guys a lot, but i thought people would like to
know ... especially any listers in the central ohio area.

383 stands for part of my birthdate, 6-3-83.
And now that I think of it, JenkiBean383 would have been a pretty cool
screen name. Oh well, too late to chane it.

This is true, and I'm as guilty of it as anyone. What struck me about the
first batch of mp3's is how good Flans' tunes are, even stronger than
Linnell's tunes this time around. I really didn't like "I've Got a Fang"
much when I first heard it (seeing it performed live made me appreciate it a
lot more, tho), but I loved "Drink" and "Cyclops Rock" instantly :)

Wow, I hadn't head about this, that is very cool! Also very cool is that I
saw Them on the Larry Sanders Show last night. It was when they were
promoting Factory Showroom, and they played S-E-X-X-Y. One of the
stagehands walked by Hank and Larry during the song and said "cool band".

Perhaps some people are behaving that way, but I see a more common complaint
as being that Emusic (and Flans) didn't describe this thing very well.

XTC never really released an album every five years. There were six XTC
albums released in the eighties (not counting Rag and Bone Buffet and the
Dukes of Stratosphear stuff. True, they only came out with two albums in
the nineties, but this was because of the strike against Virgin, and the
releases seem to be somewhat more regular as of late. There was a long wait
between Nonsuch and Apple Venus, certainly, but a five-year waiting period
was never a regular thing for XTC fans.

>or think

You seem to be forgetting that the Beatles (and XTC) never charged $10 per
month for their lack of releases. You paid money, and you got an album.
You didn't pay money with the promise of maybe getting some music at some
future time. I don't blame TMBG Unlimited subscribers for wanting to get
their money's worth.

>Remember folks, no one is putting a gun to your head to join tmbg
>Unlimited..so lets give this thing a chance to work..

I'm not sure I WANT it to work. It seems as if its negative aspects
outweigh its positive ones. Perhaps I'll eventually change my mind about
this, but, from what I've heard subscribers say, it doesn't really sound as
if Emusic is giving these people what they paid for.

Yeah, but they still haven't come out with another album, even though we
were supposed to have gotten one two years ago, according to the Johns.

Why don't you start discussing them, then? Not being an emusic subscriber,

Do we know for sure that Linnell wrote "I've Got A Fang"? The fact that he
sings it is certainly a point in favor of this theory, but the song seems a
little more Flansburghian to me. This is probably just because I tend to
think of Flans as writing the sillier songs, which might not be justified.
Linnell's voice is really appropriate for this song, though, so maybe Flans
wrote it, and gave it to his partner to sing.

I was checking out the CD101.com website just out of curiosity after reading
your post. It turns out that they have posted an interesting list of their
2000 most requested songs from 1990 to 1999. I don't think that I've ever
seen a list like this (that is, I've seen plenty of stations post *their*
top songs, but never the *most requested* songs). Pretty interesting. TMBG
is quite well represented with at least 19 songs on the list, including some
pretty obscure ones (Sapphire Bullets, Cowtown, Narrow Your Eyes) pretty far
down the list. But Birdhouse was right up there at #7. This seems to say
to me that if radio stations actually played what people were asking for,
then TMBG would be getting a lot more airtime. But, whatever.

Nathan,
I agree that some folks including myself were a bit confused on when the deal
starts and when the first couple sets of tracks will come. But I'm not sure
I agree with you about people not getting what they paid for.
Emusic's offer was 12 months of tracks and that is what they are giving people.
Sure, some folks may have thought they were getting even more than that, or that
they were going to get these new tracks earlier than they will but they are going
to get the tracks promised assuming the e-mail from Emusic is right. If someone
thought they were going to get tracks from November, 2000 to October, 2001, well that's
something to take up with Emusic.
As far as I know people have not been charged more than the first month's $9.99,
a month's worth of tracks, and not been able to download those first set of tracks.
I think February's $9.99 charge was just charged or is going to be charged soon and that
amount will go towards downloading February's tracks. Now if Emusic does not put up those
tracks at the beginning of February that is a different story. But until that time I'm
not sure that anyone can complain (apart from the slight screw-up of not defining when
the intial month downloads would be for).
I also am not sure I agree with you about whether this is a good format for getting new
TMBG music. It is difficult for people without computers, but you could say almost the same
thing for people without CD players. Sure CD players have been around a long time and are
cheaper but music format changes are going to happen and the Internet is a very popular medium
for most folks, just look at Napster. I'm sure that someone could get a copy of these songs on CD
if they really tried. But the thing about all this that really hits me is the ease through
which TMBG can record and distribute songs. All they need to do is write the songs, plop them
onto computer format and wham, they can create tons of songs and distribute them to an unlimited
number of people in the blink of an eye. There's no distribution costs that goes along with a
material item such as a CD. I'd be interested to hear what might be a better way for TMBG to
do this s easily?
As for the songs, I enjoy them very much although I haven't had a chance to listen to them in a while.
The Robert Lowell song is very cool, were the lyrics from a poem by Robert Lowell or did TMBG
make them up modelling them after Robert Lowell or his poems?
-Matt

The blurb for "I've Got a Fang" on e-music's TMBG section says, "An instant

Yep, it's from Lowell's poem "Memories of West Street and Lepke." The blurb
from e-music says they changed the words of the poem "for rock music
purposes," and basically what they did was take a phrase here and a sentence
there, so it's really quite different than the poem, but in a cool way.

Well, "not getting their money's worth" can be taken two different ways.
One is that, if emusic said that subscribers were going to get something,
and they weren't given it, then the subscribers aren't getting what they
paid for. Some people are afraid of this, and understandably so, but I
don't see emusic as having gone back on their word yet. Nonetheless, I
still think that people "aren't getting their money's worth" in the sense
that emusic is overcharging. Well, I suppose this is a point of some
contention, since subscribers DO obtain access to the entire emusic catalog.
Perhaps my complaint is not simply that the service costs too much, but
that there's no way to get only TMBG. This isn't to say that, if I
subscribed, I wouldn't download some non-TMBG stuff, because I would. If
they made a way to get JUST the TMBG, and lowered the price, though, I would
probably have signed up some time ago. The fact that you can only get it as
a package deal really complicates matters.

>Now if Emusic does not put up those
>tracks at the beginning of February that is a different story. But until
>that time I'm
>not sure that anyone can complain (apart from the slight screw-up of not

They can't complain about that, anyway. There are certainly plenty of other
things to complain about, though.

>I also am not sure I agree with you about whether this is a good format for

>thing for people without CD players. Sure CD players have been around a

I still don't know if you can say "most folks." Sure, a LOT of people have
computers, and maybe it'll eventually reach the point where computerized
music becomes the standard. I don't think that's come about yet, though.
As for your point about people without CD players, well, looking at it from
that point of view, I would say that CD is still a better format, because
it's cheaper. I don't mean the CD's are cheaper, but a CD player is MUCH
cheaper than a computer. Therefore, if I were in the odd position of only
having an eight-track player, and not being interested in anything but
having TMBG music, I'd definitely go for the CD's over the computer.

>I'm sure that someone could get a copy of these songs on CD
>if they really tried.

Perhaps, but it isn't as easy as going to the store, picking out the CD, and
giving the cashier some money. On the other hand, stores occasionally don't
carry a certain album, or run out of stock, and getting this music on the
Internet is more convenient than getting a special order.

>But the thing about all this that really hits me is the ease through
>which TMBG can record and distribute songs. All they need to do is write

>that goes along with a
>material item such as a CD. I'd be interested to hear what might be a
>better way for TMBG to
>do this s easily?

I don't think there IS a better way for them to do this easily, but there's
still the question as to whether it would be better for TMBG not to release
those songs. It's good for those of us who have computers and money,
because we get to hear songs that might otherwise have never seen the light
of day. Before, however, it was never really expensive to be a TMBG fan.
Sure, there have been a few out-of-print EP's that that could generally only
be purchased for outrageous amounts of money, but there were only a few
songs on these. The majority of TMBG's catalog could be heard simply by
buying their albums, and maybe occasionally calling up Dial-A-Song. Now,
however, TMBG and emusic are essentially saying, "This stuff is for rich
fans with computers and credit cards. Everyone else can keep on waiting for
us to put out an album on CD." This is good business sense, but it seems
unfair to those people who have bought TMBG's CD albums, but just can't
afford this Unlimited stuff.  (I'm not saying that I'm one of these people;
I'm sure I could subscribe without having to eat out of trash cans for the
rest of the year. $120 is still a lot of money, though, and it might be
even more to other fans.)

It matters because a CD is a hard copy, and it doesn't take up any space on
your computer, and you get album art and liner notes with it. If these
things don't matter to you, then I suppose it isn't important at all.
