Message-ID: <3AB715F2.A942F39F@pacificnet.net> I'm catching up with the list tonight. The album naming poll is interesting. I wonder if these are these REALLY the Johns' choices for the next album's title? If so, are the really letting the fans decide? Or just taking their opinion into consideration? I have to say I'm not really thrilled with any of the choices: > > Unreliable Narrator This is one of the better ones. > > Enter Unless there's an interesting story behind the title, I think its sort of boring. > > Our Name Is John Too cutesy. > > Gigantor First of all, there's already a German punk band called "Gigantor". I think the name comes from a Japanese animated show from the 70's. Do TMBG really want to associate themselves with such geeky fanboy stuff? Isn't bad enough that every magazine that mentions TMBG calls their music Nerd Rock ? > > Damage In Translation I suppose it depends on if there's meaning behind it or they just thought it sounds cool. To me, it seems computer related, which takes us back to the problem with "Gigantor" > Human Sacrifice This is the one one I voted for. I was surprised to see that it was coming in last in the poll. When TMBG named "John Henry", it was a comment on the defeat of their two guys and a drum machine formation and their transition to a "full band". So does "Human Sacrifice" mean they are going to be thinning out the back up band? My gut feeling is that the new album will have none of these titles. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 01:01:00 -0800 From: Bongo Subject: Re: TMBG: McSweeny's Message-ID: <3AB71C48.8820540E@pacificnet.net> "Jay G." wrote: > > there's no set street date yet. Will this mag be available on the newsstand? Is it the NEXT issue that contains the TMBG CD? Or some future issue? I went to the McSweeney site (mcsweeneys.net) and I'm confused. They seem to say that you can't buy that issue without getting a subscription. I would gladly buy it on the newsstand or through the mail (even if its pricey...most mags with a CD are) but I won't be taken advantage of and get suckered into the $46 subscription. Well, I hope I misunderstood their info. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 04:05:18 -0500 From: "The Demonic Kangaroo" Subject: Re: TMBG: McSweeny's Message-ID: <9976nv$213n$1@ussenterprise.ufp.org> Organization: They Might Be Giants, Unofficially http://www.tmbg.org According to mcsweeneys.net/books, there will be a separate ordering form for just issue #6, th issue that includes the TMBG disc. -Mike > Will this mag be available on the newsstand? (kinda long) Message-ID: <387718822.985085015991.JavaMail.root@web147-mc> First off, I would like to apologize for posting my interpretation of See The Constellation and then abandoning the list, not responding to anyone's comments on it. That was irresponsible of me. Anyway, the main reason I'm typing this: during a recent attempt to clean my room, I found several sheets of paper in a notebook detailing what seems to be a sort of script for a "Hall of Heads" video. I don't remember making this, and the handwriting is almost illegible, so I figure I must've done it some night a while ago, while fighting insomnia. After piecing together what I could make out, I decided I'd see what you people thought of it (it still might be a bit hard to follow, though): CAST - Father: J. Flansburgh, Head Keeper: J. Linnell, Girl: Drew Barrymore in Cats' Eye (that's what it says) [Music starts; Father is tucking Girl into bed. They smile at each other, he turns the light off and closes the door behind him. Girl gets up to open the door a crack, and sees Father walking downstairs, carrying something. She pauses, then leaves her room and follows him. Hiding at the top of the stairs, she watches him knock twice at a door in the basement, which opens (watching from her perspective, we can't see what's inside). He passes some sort of wrapped package through the door, seems to have a brief conversation, then shuts the door and goes back upstairs. Violin piece begins; Girl emerges from her hiding place and tiptoes down the stairs to the door. She reaches out and touches the knob. Horns begin; the door flies open, scaring Girl. Cut to behind her; we can now see Head Keeper standing just inside the door, smiling widely - he looks human, except all his limbs, fingers and neck are somewhat longer than usual; behind him, other Keepers stand around, smiling, watching Girl; a hallway stretches out of sight, each wall covered with shelves, each shelf covered with jars, each jar containing a head, each head's face smiling just like the Keepers. Lyrics begin:] Here in the Hall of Heads, You look through the keyhole [Head Keeper turns and sweeps his arm to indicate the hallway behind him] This is the Hall of Heads, [Head Keeper faces Girl again, beckoning to her with one long finger] One step through the doorway [The other Keepers shout back into the hall] Roll out that special head! [Several Keepers come running forward, pushing a cart on which is placed a jar, covered with a sheet] This is our favorite one! [Girl begins backing away from the door, terrified] Please don't try to leave! Don't leave the Hall of Heads! [Girl turns and runs away. After a moment's hesitation, the Keepers all duck through the door and follow her.] [Head Keeper's head looks under the porch] Hide underneath the porch, [Then, predictably, behind a furnace] Hide down behind the furnace, [Girl is pressed up against the furnace opposite Hall Keeper, then bolts up the stairs and is seen. As she runs down the hall, the Keepers call after her:] You can't get away! You can't really hide! Once you hear the call! The Song of the Hall of Heads! [Girl reaches a closed door and opens it. Father is inside, seated at a desk, back to the camera. Show Girl's face, she mouths the word 'daddy'. Back to Father, who picks up a mask and puts it on, then turns to face Girl, smiling. Girl screams 'daddy', then turns and runs out of the door, Father pursuing her.] [Girl tries to escape, but every possible escape is blocked by a smiling Keeper] You can't run away! Your feet won't help you run! [Girl huddles in a corner, as Father, Head Keeper and the other Keepers close in on her] You can't run away! Out of the Hall of Heads! [Close-up of Girl's face as she squeezes her eyes shut and grits her teeth. On first beat, her eyes fly open and she smiles. On second beat, the camera backs up, showing her smiling head floating in a jar on a shelf. Video ends] -- "When people come to our shows, they _dance_. It's sweaty, high energy. That's the thing people don't realize. People act like we're some kind of cultural critique on rock music. Dude -- I _like_ playing really loud and jumping up and down." -- John Flansburgh in Spin magazine (Dec 2000) ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 03:12:20 -0800 From: Bongo Subject: Re: TMBG: pre-march tmbg unlimited? Usually, they will close the action on such things. 2) I've noticed more than one person asking why previous months' UnLtd selections are not available. That's a damn good question. It almost forces new comers to emusic to obtain these MP3s through unauthorized channels. The generally accepted bootleggers' code of ethics states that if a recording, is no longer in print, its not wrong to trade it (as long as no money changes hands.) The previous UnLtd's are in effect, "out of print". Does that mean its okay for these MP3 to be offered on Napster or twistid.com? I'm not saying it is or isn't but what do you guys think? 3) Each edition of TMBG UnLdt, (along with the crypt stuff, etc.) I convert to AIFF files then burn to CD so that I can listen to them as if the were regular CD releases. I don't have speakers connected to my Mac so its the only way I can here them in "hi-fi" and in stereo. Also this way, I can hear them on my DiscMan, in the car or on my stereo. 4) I'm still trying to get my fleece. A UPS error created a long delay but its due at my door tomorrow. If you have a fleece, what's your opinion on it -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 07:31:27 EST From: Kaylum@aol.com Subject: Re: TMBG: pre-march tmbg unlimited? Usually, they will close the action on such things. I don't think there's anything wrong with someone selling an emusic item he or she owns on ebay (that's pretty much the whole idea behind ebay), and I've seen a lot of copies of Long, Tall, Weekend and Working Undercover for the Man on ebay already (one guy set a starting price for WUFTM at $70, sheesh). The fleece would fall under that category. What I would have a problem with is someone burning a bunch of copies of the Unlimited issues and selling them as "official" cds (like the fake "Superfuled Freaksickles" I've seen). 2) I've noticed more than one person asking why previous months' UnLtd selections > are not available. The official response from emusic was that TMBG were treating each months' selections like magazine issues, which is fine, but don't most magazines provide some way to get back issues? Maybe not. Emusic also said that they have not yet decided if or how back issues will be made available, implying that they will. Knowing TMBG, most if not all of the stuff will indeed become available again one way or another (especially if No is ever released). 3) Each edition of TMBG UnLdt, (along with the crypt stuff, etc.) I convert to AIFF > files then burn to CD so that I can listen to them as if the were regular CD > releases. Yeah, I can't wait to be able to listen to the Unlimited stuff in my car (I spend a LOT of time driving), and I'm also worried about losing the stuff if my comp crashes...emusic should really consider what they are going to do about paying customers who lose their stuff. 4) I'm still trying to get my fleece.
