To me, most of Their best lyrics and melodies, and most interesting experiments (well, okay, not "Hearing Aid"), were on this album. Luckily, the production (which could have been schmaltzy and overdone) sounded *gorgeous* and full; something like the instrumental bridge to "Road Movie to Berlin" really demands that huge brass sound. "Apollo 18" also had a great and distinctive production style, but I hate hate HATE the bland guitar sound of their other '90s stuff. Yell at me all you want -- I blame Elektra for trying to turn them into a band poised for stardom, and then not promoting or supporting them at all in the mid-'90s. The early albums have something that the Elektra albums are missing -- a sense of "Hey, what happens when I push *this* button?" -- a spirit that extended to their lyrical/musical envelope-pushing as well as their studio trickeries. The pink album and "Lincoln" are testaments to the link between poverty and the creative process. My guess is that if they had had a full band to begin with, and they didn't have to rely on things like old cocktail-lounge drum machines and samples of skipping polka records, those records would have been a LOT more straightforward. And less interesting (to me). I mostly love "State Songs" because of how low-budget it sounds. I think the spareness of it complements the songs really well. On the other hand, the Johns don't exist just to make the fans happy -- I never got to see them live back Then, but I can only imagine what a pain in the ass their live setup must have been. They were probably hella relieved when they finally had the money to hire a real backup band. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 11:32:30 -0800 (PST) From: Jamal Rogers Subject: Re:TMBG: Re: Oblongs Message-ID: <32090055.985548750117.JavaMail.imail@scorch.excite.com> Buttknobs was six years ago what oblongs is right now. It was supposed to be ready in time for the Florida shows, but I talked to Flansburgh after the show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, and he said that there was a problem at the printers. Didn't say anything about when it would be ready, tho. PR Mega ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #39-26 ******************************
