Oh well. Just give me some tips, >everyone. Not to sound too smarmy or discouraging, but perhaps the best tip for you to know is that the Johns do not particularly want to meet you. Realize that this knowledge may spare you the unhappiness, embarrassment, and later resentment, felt after you have waited for two hours after the show at the rear door only to learn that the band left by the secret side door specifically to avoid coming in contact with you (not you, John Ferrer, who I am sure is a talented and kind person, but the collective "you" made up of people that are always hanging around the back door after every show in every city). Sure, you may get lucky and get an autograph or a "howdy," but chances are greater that you will either get "dodged" or get a quick peek with a "no thanks" in response to your request for them to sign something (especially with Linnell). So my 100% sincere advice for the best way to enjoy the show is to do this: 1) Show up early. 2) Stake out a good spot near the stage. 3) Save your spot, waiting patiently through the opening act. Applauding politely, as appropriate. 4) Take turns with friends going for beers or sodas (tip generously), and bathroom visits. 5) Defend your location against those late-arriving ne'r-do-wells trying to weasel their way in front of you (but also realize that you are entitled to the extreme minimum of personal space). 6) Enjoy a great TMBG show. Sing along. Jump. Dance. Try not to accidentally kick anyone in the crotch. (Optional: Hold up a handmade sign reading "All your base are belong to us" and then be siliently ridiculed by dozens of nameless strangers for being "So 15 minutes ago"). 7) At all cost, avoid trying to climb up on the stage or throwing anything onto the stage as this will generally cause the show to end abruptly with all in attendance wanting to kill you. 8) Scream like a maniac for encores. 9) When the show is finally over visit the t-shirt table and buy something with TMBG on it (sometimes, very rarely, Flansburgh will stop by the table briefly to sign stuff). 10) Realize that, with the show ended, your paid entitlement to see the performers is now over. Know also that you have been given advance warning that they would prefer not to interact with you further and that any continued attempts to contact them are probably unwelcome. 11) Write an up-beat concert review and post it here. Be sure to include a set-list and detailed accounts of witty between-song banter. 12) Take all possible precautions to void crashing your bicycle in a big South Carolina wreak, as it will cause your natural "I" shape to be bent into a "V" shape (although potential ensuing punitive damages may enable you to have waiters bring you cocktails and snails). Of course, others may have completely different tips on how to meet the Johns. Yer Pal Paul Not back on that old Time is Money kick, still on it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 13:03:21 EST From: PRMega@aol.com Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: To See the Johns Message-ID: <7c.13a399af.27f38169@aol.com> << Of course, others may have completely different tips on how to meet the Johns. >> Actually, at the past 2 or 3 shows I've been to, Flansburgh stuck around after the show to sign stuff. He even went over to the t-shirt stand to help out the new cashier, and I ended up buying a TMBG t-shirt from John himself :) ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #39-29 ******************************
