I'm usually just a lurker (for several years now, actually), but this outpouring of hatred from Jordan about Another First Kiss just smacked me as weird. I mean, I LOVED the new version. I've been playing it almost constantly, and I'll be perfectly geeked when/if it's on the new album. I mean, YES, it's quite a departure, musically, for Them, and, in fact, I remarked to my friend TJ that it really sounds like a different band with Flansy as the singer, but I really liked that about it. Maybe I just dig wussy ballads, but I really dug it. I mean, I'm not trying to start a flame war over it at all. Jordan, you're more than entitled to your opinion. By all means. I just was surprised that someone truly hated that song. On a related note, so far, Mink Car (the album not the song) seems like sort of a mixed bag. I'm REALLY sick of Older, Cyclops Rock and Edith Head (although the LTW tracks would be okay if rerecorded, I think. I always liked Older but the LTW version doesn't seem "grand" enough). I really hope they include Thunderbird as that's my favorite non-studio track now that they've finally come up with a kickin' studio version of On the Drag. I'd also like to see them rerecord "Workin Undercover" as the live versions I've heard are far cooler and more anthemic than the somewhat flat WUFTM EP version. I dig the song "Mink Car" (although I agree with whoever said it should be called "theme from Mink Car" just to keep with tradition). I've Got a Fang is okay.. the live one at the Cleveland show was very cool.. although I see that more as an EP B-Side. Bangs is a great one, I'm glad to see it's slated for the new record (although it's another tune that could stand to be rerecorded). I guess in general, I'd like to see Mink Car be released as a double-album as they have so many good new songs (or comparatively new since FS), including ones we haven't heard yet such as Yeh Yeh, My Man, and Unreliable Narrator (if it is indeed a different song than Substitute, which many, including myself belive). I'd also like to see a few more new ones creep into the live show. I think at this point, most of the folks at the shows are die hard fans, people who've been to see them maybe a few times, not "Floodies" (not that I hate Floodies), and could handle not hearing "Birdhouse" just once. For my part, I'd love to hear them bust out with Finished With Lies.. or a revival of On the Drag or Thunderbird. I love Them.. I've seen 'em seven times in several cities. It's kind of depressing to know for sure that I'll hear certain songs EVERY time (Birdhouse, Istanbul, Particle Man, James K Polk [although the double cannons are a NICE touch], The Guitar, Lie Still Little Bottle [although flansy's tree branch seems to make him SO happy], and She's Actual Size to name a few) It's not that I dislike those songs. I love them (except maybe Particle Man, which I got sick of about ten years ago and never really recovered from). It's just that, like I said, at this point, most of the people who are coming to the live shows are the folks who've been keeping up with them for the past five years DESPITE the lack of a new studio album and could handle hearing a lot of their newer stuff. A lotta folks were singing along to Cyclops Rock at the Cleveland and Pittsburgh shows on this tour. Wow. that was long, unneccessary, and sort of stream-of-conciousness. I had more, but I decided to hold it, because my head hurts. This is what happens when you're a listee for years and rarely come out of your hole, I guess. -Sensurround _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There's a partial tracklist at . The ten songs listed there are: Bangs I've Got A Fang Cyclops Rock Finished With Lies It's So Loud In Here Yeh Yeh (presumably a cover of a song by Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames) My Man Cyclops Rock She Thinks She's Edith Head Older I believe "Wicked Little Critta" was mentioned as a track previewing the new album, so it might be on there as well. Flansburgh has said that "Thunderbird" will "probably" be on it. "Mr. Xcitement" and "Your Mom's Alright" are possibilities, although they probably won't both be on there. There's also a song called "Mink Car," which, being the same as the title they're currently giving us, might end up being the "theme song" from the album. Actually, they found a new label for it (Rounder Records dropped the album, for some unknown reason), so it probably will be out, although we don't know exactly when. >The new album was supposed to come out first in '99, then in '00, then >August 15th '01, and now sometime in September...what's the deal with all >this nonsense? I guess not having a label was a barrier at first. Now, as far as I can tell, it's simply the fact that they're working in a highly unreliable industry. As for the announcements that the album would come out in 1999 and 2000, that bugged me, too. I mean, I can see that there might have been good reasons for not releasing them in those years, but why get everyone's hopes up? If I recall, the new album was "definitely" going to come out in 2000, and, well, it didn't. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 14:44:20 EDT From: HotelDetective11@aol.com Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: tmbg-list Digest #41-6 Message-ID: <12.c711447.2826f584@aol.com> In a message dated 5/6/01 10:38:25 AM Eastern Daylight Time, vajra76@hotmail.com writes: > That kinda reminds me of that track on Ween's "The Pod" where they're > "ordering" Mexican food. > haha. Was it one of those little five minute things? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 23:45:43 EDT From: CallMeDoctorWorm@aol.com Subject: TMBG: Oberlin 5/5 (Rick's first concert) Message-ID: Hey all! I went to my first They Might Be Giants concert Sturday, and I'd have to say it was totally rocking. From the beginning: SR-71 was okay, I guess. As good as could be expected from a band that was opening for Bon Jovi the same night. I did like their cover of America's Sister Golden Hair. Muckaferguson was great. They were funny, and I like the way they rotated bass, drums, etc. Then the big boys came on, and played How Can I Sing Like a Girl. Nothing really different, but it rocked. James K. Polk -- a heavier version, I loved it. Particle Man -- Linnell sang "Don't cry out loud" in the middle. Really cool. Famous Polka -- Flans let the front row play his guitar. I think they did it three times through. Cyclops Rock -- Cool. I liked it. I've only heard it before on the Internet. Drink -- "This song is called 'Drink'. Spelled D-R-I-N-K-Y, you say it 'Drink'." Same as above. A different sound. Cool. Don't -- "This song is celebrating its bicentennial year in They Might Be Giants' repertoire. It's the sesquecentennial, I think." Again, nifty. The Guitar -- The best song of the show. About four minutes in, Flans introduced Danny Weinkauf for a bass solo. Then, the conga-ing started: "Everbody conga! I'm not fucking kidding! Put your hands on a stranger's waist And lose your ride home!" Flans wouldn't stop carrying on like so until everybody conga-d. It was great. No One Knows My Plan -- Came on right after The Guitar. I liked Dan Miller's solo. Spy -- I was curious to see how they ended it. I liked the way they did it. Nifty. Flans did a funky Cumbaya thing here. Mr. Tambourine Man -- Cool, sounded just like the mp3 I got of them doing it live, but better. Flans on his in-ear monitor: "When it goes out, it fucks us up like crazy... The great thing about live performance is it's your worst nightmares brought into reality. You can't dream things worse than what happens on stage." Shoehorn -- All I can say is that Dan Hickey is the best Glockenspeil player I've ever seen. Pet Name -- I liked hearing this live. funky. "We'd do songs by request, if it weren't for the computerized nature of the light show." (It was an outdoor concert at around 5:00 PM) Purple Toupee -- I liked the way they rocked out the ending. groovy. Older -- I love the pause thing. Subliminal -- Linnell tried to sing it backwards at the end, but it didn't quite work. Doctor Worm -- my favorite song. I was near tears. it was... magical. Birdhouse -- my first favorite TMBG song. Flans on the solo: "Southern rock hermaphrodite!" Boss of Me -- really got the crowd going. a different solo every time I hear this song. WDTSS -- Flans: "Photomaking equipment, lithography equipment... Everything you can ever imagine, a gas!" "The sun is so large, a million oberlins could fit inside!" "All the heat and light of the sun is caused by nuclear reactions between estrogen, estrogen, estrogen, and more estrogen!" After the show, I got the setlist from the sound guy. Then I walked backstage (it was in a football field), and John Linnell himself (not a robot sent to torture and manipulate me) signed it. Yes, I was the grinning kid \with the red "SH" baseball cap. Not bad for the first concert. Doc Rick Worm ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #41-7 *****************************
