Well, I guess its up to me. Here it goes... 1) The video for "She Thinks She's Edith Head " is now in heavy rotation on MTV. 2) The Crummer Family is opening for The Mamas and The Papas on their reunion tour 3) TMBG get 3.5 million in settlement with Pizza Hut 4) TMBG ordered to pay 2 million in lawsuit from Lucas Films for unauthorized use of "Star Wars" theme in live performance ("NEW songs, nothing but NEW songs!") 5) Remaining 1.5 million used to produce video for "My Man" to be shown exclusively at Imax theaters (in 3D) 6) Listees cry "reference!" after seeing an episode of the X Files, in which Mulder interviews an alien abductee describing a UFO's appearance as "sort of like a hovering sombrero". 7) TV preacher (sorry, not sure how to spell "tele-vangilist") Pat Robertson claims "Fibber Island" contains satanic messages. 8) In the latest emusic TMBG newsletter, Flans reveals "Mink Car" will contain 9 hidden bonus tracks ....each live, improvised and based on a movie in the "Friday the 13th" series. Fans with advance copies complain the best of these, "Jason Takes Manhattan" is ruined by loudmouth idiot screaming out, "sounds like Valley of the Dolls!" 9) "Thunderbird" licensed by Ford for upcoming ad campaign 10) Bruce Springsteen covers "Cabbagetown" on his upcoming live album. 11) And of course, the obligatory "John Flansburgh Dies in Fiery Auto Crash" (forwarded from AP news wire.) Its been a busy week. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 09:50:06 -0400 From: karinh@sterl.com Subject: Re:TMBG: theymightbegiants.com updated Message-Id: <437173334@sterl.com> ------------------------------ From: Kaylum@aol.com Message-ID: <171.a10364.28ce26bf@aol.com> Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 10:22:55 EDT Subject: Re: TMBG: theymightbegiants.com updated In a message dated 9/10/01 9:49:17 AM Eastern Daylight Time, karinh@sterl.com writes: > Who says this, and where?? www.theymightbegiants.com [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] Did anyone else see that Mink Car is #74 on Amazon.com's sales list? This must be due to the recent tmbg.org server outage. Their only available backup was months old, so I imagine that anyone who's unsubscribed since then has found themselves re-subscribed. Perhaps a bigger problem is the people who subscribed between the backup and the outage, because they would now be unsubscribed and may not realize it. So, everybody, raise your hand if you're not here. :) On the other hand, it could be destiny. So have I missed anything in the past week? I was using the news version of the list, and only just now got back on (the standard email version, which I must say is not preferable). Alack, o fate! whither news.tmbg.org? So my question: What kind of sales are considered good in the first month of an album? 50,000-100,000? And what do you think tmbg's Mink Car will accomplish? I dont want to rub it in just want you all to share in the joy. Today we got in a nice stack of Mink Car promo posters. Two sided! one with the John's charlies angel pose and the other side the album cover. Im going to have that puppy signed. I made a mix CD for work to play so today while working I heard all their greatest hits from The pink Album to Mink Car plus some of my fave miscellanoius tracks from here and there-- It was nuts when I saw a mother and her baby singing along to Whistling in the Dark.....well not the baby.... We've got flyers up in the store people are taking them and people are calling asking its all a tizzy and the show that night at The Moore Theater is SOLD OUT! So that brings me to my next thought. They Might Be Giants dont need MTV. They dont need a huge push in singles or videos, they ARE huge. I've come to realize this in the buzz I see in this city over the in-store and the new album. It seems Seattle has a big quiet TMBG following. When I saw them at the Bumbershoot festival in 98 the arena WAS PACKED. there was one time during STD's realease my friend and I sent Dr. Worm to our local "Alternative" station and they said no thanks. Then I had them sent a Boss of Me CD and i called them several times to play it and I always got a "yeah ...sure...i like TMBG. ill play it" did they ....no. It upset me cause i thought no one will hear these songs in the great Northwest But you know what? i dont care anymore. It seems Seattle has Giant-Heads and they probably always will be. And you know what else? They really did name the album Mink Car! It was absolutely horrible for the whole world, but I can't imagine what it must be like right there in the midst of it all. I don't have any real friends or family in New York, but I'm legitimately scared that even just one of the many people I know here and elsewhere online might not be around anymore. And it couldn't have happened on a worse day. Which brings me to another point. Someone on the newsgroup acted with disgust at a couple of people worried about the Johns. It seems easy to call it insensitive when someone's worried about celebrities, but I don't think it's fair to reduce someone's feelings for a band to something they can't feel worry for in a situation like this. The safety of the Johns is a legitimate concern, and I think it would be even more disgusting of us to listen to their music and talk about them on a regular basis and then just not worry about them because "real people" are also in danger. The Johns are also real people, one of which I have met, and both of which I consider to be a great inspiration. I'm sure they're okay, all logic says they would be, but Christ, don't feel bad if you're worried about them. If this had started five hours earlier, they really would have been in trouble. In case anyone wants to think about anybody else, did anyone have any interesting plans to celebrate Mink Car Day, carried out or not? I went to school in the snowman TMBG shirt with a "NEW ALBUM TODAY" sign taped under the band's name. I was supposed to drive a vanload of people to go pick up the album this evening, but it doesn't look like it's going to work out. I'm also pissed off at EMusic. On our doorsteps by the release date, huh? All history and common sense told me it wouldn't be here for me today, especially since nobody else has gotten it yet, but in the back of my mind I honestly believed they wouldn't just flat-out lie to us and that somehow, against all odds, the signed CD would be here today. But nooo. Oh well. Sorry for the extremely long message. I'm going to go watch Daily Show and hope it's the repeat of yesterday's. I've been watching smoke curl around since 10:00 this morning. Once again, I hope everyone gets through this okay, and please, everyone remember that "bombing the fuck out of the Middle East," as I've heard so many times today, is not the proper response to what has happened. Remember that whoever did this probably thought we were all evil, and thinking the same of anyone else is just as dangerous, and will ultimately just add on to the senseless casualties. >From: CallMeDoctorWorm@aol.com >Reply-To: CallMeDoctorWorm@aol.com >To: tmbg-list@tmbg.org >Subject: Re: TMBG: New York City... >Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 18:36:10 EDT > >I hope everybody on this list is alright. Now it looks almost impossible that they'll be flying anywhere in the next couple of days. At the very least they might be able to get a flight out to Eugene or Portland tomorrow if they're very lucky, I can't see them making the Boise or Seattle gigs at all. If I were in Idaho or Washington I'd look to the Oregon or more likely California shows to see TMBG unless they come up with a new date in, say, November. * ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt James mattj@charm.net * ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, 12 Sep 2001, Leo Bicknell wrote: > > It's very hard to fly out of New York city to a far away town when > all airplanes are grounded, for instance. > > On Wed, Sep 12, 2001 at 03:30:26PM -0400, Furfr@aol.com wrote: > > "Larger problems"? I'm not positive but the preview is > probably somewhere at Haikutunnel.com. i wrote a post to the list about this right in the middle of the tmbg.org computer crash, so it might not have gotten to people. they do use snowball in hell throughout the preview, which is available on haikutunnel.com (in the "gallery" section). check it out, it's fun to hear the boys on a trailer -- i nearly jumped out of my chair when the song started playing during the previews when is saw it. i'm also happy to announce that the song is in the film as well! it plays over the closing credits, which is traditionally where a film's "theme song" will go. i saw it as part of the boston film festival, the film will open in independent theatres in september or october. i'd recommend it, it's a funny offce comedy film, and we should support all filmmakers who use tmbg! -e.
