Here's everything I've written to EMusic and all of their replies: ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 12 - FROM ME, TO EMUSIC: eMusic Customer service, I am a subscriber to your "They Might Be Giants Unlimited " service. I would like to bring to your attention a problem with the first song on the November edition of TMBG UnLtd. The song "Disappointing Show" had some very annoying glitches in it. The sound cuts out for a fraction of a second a few times. Some people call these "hiccups" but what ever you call them, they are very distracting. Realizing it was a possibility that the file got corrupted as I downloaded it, I've since downloaded it an additional three times. The exact same glitches occur in the same places on all the files. So I'm asking you to listen to the file carefully. Its located on your site at: http://content.emusic.com/downloads/731588/They_Might_Be_Giants_TMBG_-TMBG_Unltd_October-01-Disappointing_Show_Live_The_Disappointers.mp3 In the past, very similar glitches appeared on other TMBG Unlimited files. Once it was on the song "Fibber Island" and then again with the "Theme from Flood". In those cases, the file was either replaced or a disclaimer had been made blaming the source tape. Neither has been done with "Disappointing Show". I would appreciate if you could explain the reasons for these problems and if they will be corrected. I'm hoping that you were unaware of the problem and will replace the file on your site with a non defective one. Here's a guide to what times the glitches occur in "Disappointing Show" 00:17: small glitch 00:47: big glitch 01:17: small glitch 01:47: big glitch (This is the worst one. Its sort of a stutter.) Thank you for your time, xxxx xxxxxxxxx ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 13- EMUSIC REPLIES: Hi, Unfortunately, they appear on the master recorded at the live show. We cannot edit these recordings. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Regards, Ann EMusic.com Service ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 13 - FROM ME, TO EMUSIC: Regarding your explanation of the problems in the file "Disappointing Show", I feel that at the very least, eMusic should have a disclaimer about such a thing on the download page. However, it seems strange to me that this is the third time the exact same type of error has appeared TMBG UnLtd files. Its hard for me to believe that there was an error in three different recordings. Furthermore, this is only one example of the countless errors in the TMBG UnLtd series. Nearly every month, there have been problems with the quality. Most of them can not be excused by a bad master tape. I've never seen such sloppiness associated with a paid music service. One of the other common problems is that the volume levels are often very inconsistent. For example, in the first edition of TMBG UnLtd, "Cyclops Rocks" is extremely louder than the rest of the songs. When listening to the entire program with headphones, the song is deafening. Also , many tracks begin with as much as five seconds of silence. After some songs end, there are several seconds of silence. Why is this? The answer can only be that eMusic gave no consideration to quality. In this case, you could have quickly and easily removed the silences. You should remove such errors. I hope you don't try to defend this with ,"but that's the way they were given to us". You have some responsibility to edit or question what you are given instead of blindly throwing it on your service. You need to listen to what you are given and then listen to the final files that you put on your site. If there's a problem, you need to call someone representing the artist. Aren't you embarrassed that I should have to explain this to you? A few times, the selections for the month were changed due to your mistakes. For example, in the October Edition, one song was listed as being "Cut the Strings and Blind". They were actually two separate songs. Once again this proves to me that you have so little concern, that no one even bothers to listen to the files before they are put up. The fact that the information on the download page is often filled with misspellings seems to be further proof to me that the problems with the files themselves are most likely due to your laziness. I might have ignored a few error but this is ridiculous. According to your web site, They Might Be Giants are one of your most frequently downloaded artists. I can't understand why none of you would take some interest in what you are offering. I would like to give you the chance to explain these things and offer some sort of compensation. The first thing you need to do is admit that you have made a numerous mistakes and that there are no quality control considerations made. Thank you for your time, xxxx xxxxxxxxx ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 20 - EMusic's Customer Service promises, "You will receive a response to your message within two (2) business days". A week had gone by with no reply. So I wrote again, FROM ME, TO EMUSIC: On November 13, I sent comments and questions to EMusic's customer service ("Re: TRACKING NUMBER: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"). I received a confirmation receipt saying that I would receive a response in two days. That was a week ago. When can I expect a a reply? Thank you, xxxx xxxxxxxxx ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 20 - EMUSIC REPLIES Hi, Your comments and questions were sent to the account manager for the TMBG Unlimited service. He is well aware of all the problems which have stemmed from the TMBG content. Regards, Ann EMusic.com Service ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 20 - FROM ME, TO EMUSIC: I'm glad to hear that. I hope that he or she will contact me sometime soon either by email or by phone at xxx-xxx-xxx. Thanks, xxxx ___________________________________________________________ NOVEMBER 24 No response from EMusic yet. We are in the middle of a holiday weekend so I'm going to wait until the middle of next week to write again. (Even if it wasn't a holiday weekend, I don't think they were going to reply.) In my next message, I plan telling them that I'm tired of explaining situations to them in detail only to receive one line answers or no reply at all. ___________________________________________________________ -B O N G O ------------------------------ Message-ID: <3BFFA26A.A8978B1E@pacificnet.net> Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2001 05:36:45 -0800 From: Bongo Organization: None Subject: Re: TMBG: Fingertips:"Donkey Kong-O"? Nathan Mulac DeHoff wrote: > > I downloaded FreeAmp (no thanks to anyone on here), but I can't figure out > to get it to download these files. (And yes, I am logged in to eMusic.) > Can anyone help? Sounds like the problem is that your web browser doesn't know its suppose to use Free Amp. I use a Mac and Netscape. I'll assume you are using a PC and Internet Explorer. This is roughly what you do... You need to select FreeAmp as the default mp3 player in your web browser. In Explorer its under "Preferences" Look for "Receiving Files" which contains an options list called "File Helpers". Scroll down to and select "MPEG-1 Layer 3". Then click the "CHANGE" button. That will bring up the EDIT FILE HELPER window. There are two buttons in that window called "BROWSE". Click one of them. Then navigate to where you have the actual FreeAmp program on you PC. and select it. Do that with the other "BROWSE" button too. (I'm not sure what the difference is between the two BROWSE buttons are. I think one might tell it what application to download it with and the other which to play it with. Do both to be sure.) Then click OKAY. Also, make a note of what application it was set at before ...in case you have to change it back later. When you do that, the icon for "MPEG-1 Layer 3" should have changed to FreeAmp's. Then when you're on EMusic, click the "Download entire album". Now it should be using FreeAmp to open the files. I can't guarantee it will work since I only use a Mac but I'm assuming the PC version of Explorer is very similar. Also its the same idea if you are using Netscape as your browser. (Change the .mp3 helper to FreeAmp in the prefs.) If you knew the length of a song it seems that you could do the math and figure out what the file size would be. -B O N G O ------------------------------ Message-ID: <000e01c17548$9209dea0$8dc59540@internetconnect.net> From: "Mike Hooker" Subject: TMBG: town hall bootleg cds Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2001 19:31:42 -0500 hi, i made a real nice set of cd's from the NYC town hall gig. i cant take full credit, its 80% mine and 20% from another source, as i brought too short a tape. it sounds great and its up for trade. i'm looking for NON tmbg trades in return( unless its some kind of show you think i cant live without), i've more TMBG than i can listen to . please contact me off list. i dont get the digest cause it was messing up my mail, and i cant read the archives like i usually do cause they are down for a while. take at look at my music trading list ( new URL) http://hometown.aol.com/mhooker216/myhomepage/index.html have fun, Mike Hooker ------------------------------ From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: Re: TMBG: Flans fan Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 03:59:18 +0000 Message-ID: Kate Sith: >Anyway, I think the other thing that makes me love Linnell so much is that >I'm constantly trying to understand what makes him so afraid of fans.
